Good luck. You will definately need a guide, there are places where its just too easy to get lost. And the maps are just about useless.

Hi Rachel.I was 53 when I did the track and carried my own pack just to see whether I still could. It was bloody hard work. I dont regret carrying it, but would not do so again. I'd give a porter a job next time.Peter.

I got my last lot of socks from Mountain Equipt, they were having a sale so I bought 5 pr. I just had a look at them and there is no brand name on them. I do know that they are American , but made from Australian merino wool, which I found rather odd.Funny enough we are off to Rays in about 30 minutes, they are having a 25% off sale this morning…[Read more]

I go to Rays Outdoors at Lidcombe (a suburb of Sydney), the people there are really good and know what they are talking about. I bought some Wigwam socks from Anaconda as well abd find them really good. They dont sell them anymore .

I dont know if there is any anti venom or not, but youd never get to it in time anyway. As regards maps, theres some good ones on google that have all the elevations.

I whole heartedly agree with your water proof boot theory. My boots have drainage holes in the bottom and are'nt completely waterproof.

One more thought Scacey would be stab injuries from the small sticks and tree roots that are sticking up out of the mud on the track. Some are very pointy and sharp. You could injure your ankles this way. Im not sure you could wear gaiters with these shoe/gloves.

I prefer military boots to hiking boots, they seem to be made stronger and just seem to do the job better. We are off to New Zealand next month to walk The Milford Sound Track and I'll be wearing GarmontT8 combat boots, I have found them to be outstanding in every way.http://www.kitbag.com.au/products/T8-Garmo…ombat-Boot.html

Ive seen runners wearing these on dirt tracks in the Blue Mountains around Sydeny, the only thing is I dont think they would stay on your feet when going through deep mud. I reckon youd lift your foot out then have to fish around for the shoe at the bottom of the swamp. Im thinking of the area near Goldie River.Like Gail I wear vibram soled "soft"…[Read more]

I think it was about 3 or 4 months before all the clicking came to an end. Im glad it did though, my wife refused to walk up stairs with me, it only happened on stairs.I also take a couple of fish oil tablets a day as well, Im not sure why, but it makes me popular with my neighbours cat.The ultra probably means nothing and is just an advertising…[Read more]

I use Thompsons ultra glucosamine 15 plus. My knees used to make clicky noises going upstairs and people would turn and look at me (true story). Now I use these and my kness are fine. Ive been on them for years. I had no knee trouble on Kokoda at all.

Hi Dianne. We did Kokoda 18 months ago and were spread out for miles along the track. Somedays we only saw the other trekkers when we all stopped for a cuppa or some lunch as they were so far in front of us.Everyone just cruised at their own speed. It was no big deal.Peter.

I used a Deuter pack and found them to be excellent. I used a garbage bag rather than a dry sack. They work just as well. If you dont have high top boots then gaiters may be necessary, its a personnel choice really. I didnt use them though.

Not all hydration units have their own back packs. The ones that go in, or on your pack are just a bladder with a tube.
