QUOTE(peterh13 @ 10 Feb 2011, 08:02 PM) [snapback]12864[/snapback]I go to Rays Outdoors at Lidcombe (a suburb of Sydney), the people there are really good and know what they are talking about. I bought some Wigwam socks from Anaconda as well abd find them really good. They don't sell them anymore .That's good to hear Peter. I had given up hope of…[Read more]
Saloo8 replied to the topic Snakes And Comparison in the forum General Discussions 14 years, 2 months ago
I saw very little wildlife on my trek. There just isn't that much there along the track. Certainly no snakes to speak of, but my dad saw one on the "tractor track" at the end of his 2nd trek. His guide lunged at it with his blade and took care of it in seconds. To be honest I am far more concerned about snakes here in Australia-I always see at…[Read more]

As much as I love camping gear stores, I only go into Rays if absolutely necessary. The staff are way under trained and have never been able to "sell" me anything!I trekked in 2010 and wore Keen Targhee II mid hike boots. They were excellent and I had no blisters, soreness, cramping or any other problem with my feet. Really lightweight for a…[Read more]

Hi Andy,I took long gaiters and found I didn't need them-certainly not long ones anyway! When it is dry, you don't need them at all but when it turns to mud, short ones are great. They keep the bulk of the mud off your boots, although when it rains, you'll still have wet boots. I left mine behind as I don't envisage needing them again in a…[Read more]

Are you carrying your own big pack? If so, I would recommend a way to attach it on the inside of your pack. Most packs (at least the smaller ones) have a velcro tab or similar to 'hang' your hydro pack from and they also have a 'port' where your tube comes through. I have put mine in a few different packs but usually smaller ones. You really do…[Read more]

Well, tomorrow is the day. Unfortunately I did my ankle 2 days ago and I have had to withdraw. But the good news is the funds we have raised are not affected and the other three members of our team, appropriately named KTL trek 610 plus 1, can go ahead as a threesome. If anyone wants to donate to the Kokoda Challenge foundation, you can do so…[Read more]
Saloo8 replied to the topic Trekking Poles in the forum General Discussions 14 years, 6 months ago
Poles are funny things. I have never before used a pole and until I return to PNG, I most likely won't use one again. But on the track, it was such an essential piece of equipment for me, especially coming down hills.
Saloo8 replied to the topic Trekking Poles in the forum General Discussions 14 years, 6 months ago
We bought three poles back, carved, scorched and unvarnished. Customs just need to inspect the pole and check that you have cleaned any dirt off the bottom of the pole. Other than that, it isn't an issue to bring them back.We actually made a "sleeve" in which we could put our poles for transporting. It ensured they were not bashed around or…

My condolences to Stan's Family. Having read so much about Stan and his experiences on the track, it is sad news to know he passed. May he rest now with his brother Butch.

Hi Rae,I didn't bother taking a trekking pole. Your porter/s will cut you a stick from the bush and sharpen it whenever the end becomes blunt. I wondered if it was going to do the job and it was excellent. Reaching the finish with your stick that helped you all the way creates a certain attachment to it-it is as though it has absorbed all the…[Read more]
Saloo8 replied to the topic Alternative Camping Heater Source Other Than Propane? in the forum General Discussions 14 years, 6 months ago
Not sure. In Australia, I have never needed to heat my tent. I have however used one of those little snap gel pack things (sorry, don't know the tech name!) to heat my toes when I was camping in Alpine country.Hopefully someone else may have an idea.

I'm right there with you Pam. This time 4 weeks ago I was on the track and I still can't shake it. The experience was simply amazing! Garni was a porter on out trek too (personal) and I got to know the back of his feet pretty well by the end of it! He was great and I would request he be on our trek again when I do come back. We also had…[Read more]

I agree Mrs Moo. I had heaps of leftovers at the end of each day as did the other trekkers in our group. We were able to pass on our leftovers to the Boys who were then able to trade in villages for bananas with what they didn't need from the pack. A win-win for all!
