MemberHi,
If you are an Australian citizen, simply purchase a visa on arrival at the Port Moresby International Airport. The cost is K100 ($50 AUD) approximately and is very easy to obtain when you say you are visiting Papua New Guinea to walk the Kokoda Trail.
Other than the hassles of sending your passoport away for a visa and the possibility of it being lost in the post, the queue at Port Moresby Airport is usually shorter than the queue with visa's already, so you get through customs faster.
Cheers

Kokoda Challenge Race Details
Race will commence at 7am on the 27th August at Owers' Corner and will finish at the Kokoda Rotary Memorial Hospital Archway. If you want to win this race, you will have to plan to only stop at checkpoints as Brendan Buka and other serious competitors do not sleep but continue through the night.
For non Papua New Guinea citizen competitors, the cost of this trek is $2650 AUD as it involves several check points which have to be manned; 2 nights accommodation; chartered aircraft both into the track itself and in and out of Kokoda; staff to be flown into the check points; food at checkpoint; trek permits; sat phone communication at all check points; radio communication; village contributions; staff in Kokoda to man the finish line; accommodation at Orohaven Kokoda Retreat. Accommodation for international competitors will be at Sogeri Lodge as its closer to the drop off point of Owers' Corner.
For Papua New Guinea Citizen national entrants the cost will be $1000 AUD. Why not sponsor your favorite guide or porter.

MemberHi,
I walked 19 times last year wearing a pair off light weight Solemans, that weren't waterproof. Light weight is important, as you lift your feet up and down 30,000 times + a day.
They didn't need wearing in at all, and didn't get any blisters at all.
They lasted the whole year as well. Need another pair for this trekking season though.
The sales lady suggested that I didn't get the waterproof pair, as when waterproof boots do get wet inside, they stay wet inside, whereas the pair I bought dried out over the day usually when they got wet, and next to the fire at night.
I think everyone will have different opinions on whether to buy waterproof boots or not though.
My next pair will not be waterproof.

MemberHi Dave,
Gail is in Kokoda at the moment, so I will answer your questions.
Post Trek accommodation is now included when trekking from Ower's Corner to Kokoda, and Gail will arrange suitable accommodation for your group.
You normally visit Bomana War Cemetary on the way to Sogeri Lodge time permitting. Otherwise you visit it when you return from Kokoda.
The brieifing will either be done at the Bomana War Cemetary or Sogeri Lodge the day you arrive in Port Morseby or if time does not permit on the morning prior to your walk.
Cheers
Shane

MemberHi,
All rubbish created between camp sites, is taken to the next camp site or next rubbish pit that has been dug along the trail.
Litter is not a big problem on the trail, as the trekkers, along with guides and porters are usually picking up bits and pieces while walking along the trail.
Each campsite has a rubbish pit dug in the bush that they fill with rubbish. After the pit is full, they dig another pit and cover the old one over. Similiar to what we do in Australia, but on a smaller scale.
I hope this answers your question.

MemberHi Brooke,
You met Wayne when you left Menari. You were walking down the new steps and Wayne and I were walking up to Menari. Just in case you don't remember.
He is a very friendly guy and goes out off his way for everyone. I feel for him and his family. Loosing a child would be the worst thing possible.
