I took a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ1. I took 445 photos @ max resolution and 3 x 1 minute videos with it. My second battery died just at the end of my plane flight back whilst looking at my pictures.

Even if you had a solar charger or something it wouldn't do you much good as you are under the cover of the rainforest most of the time. Just take extra batteries. AAs are easy if your camera takes them, and other specific camera batteries can be had for $4 each on Ebay (they are around $90 in camera shops). I took 3 batteries and only used 2.

Many thanks to all for the journey. It truly was magnificent, as well as being just about as tough as it gets. Not only are the people of PNG wonderful to you, but I also found the people who undertake their own personal journeys to be wonderful people as well.

For example: Alison (from above email) knew about the Kokoda hospital and it's lack of particular types of drugs (painkillers), and so managed to organise to bring over a whole carton full of those particular drugs. She and Bec then took off from our accommodation at the airport and walked over to the hospital (not a short walk – especially just 2 hours after finishing the whole trek!!) to give these items to the hospital.

The whole trip was spent with people who were helping each other out, sharing, and caring for each other in general. This from most who had never met before in life. I can not speak highly enough of all these people as well as our guides and porters.

Thank you KTL. Thank you fellow trekkers. I look forward to another stroll in the future.

    Carey Edwards.

After years in leather boots and always getting frustrated with them getting waterlogged (my pet hate) I have been trying out a new pair of synthetics for the last month. They're the Salomon Elios Mid XCR. These things are nearly as comfortable as a pair of runners, and very, very light…and even lighter by comparison when compared to a waterlogged boot. I'm looking forward to kicking heck out of them on Kokoda in April. I have had no blisters from these things at all. They came highly recommended to me by the boys at Extreme Sports in Cairns and I'm very happy with them so far so thumbs up to them atm.

Despite the gore-tex (anti pong thing) in them they still pong after a good day in them however. smile.gif

    Hi Kez
Like you, I come from the tropics and can't handle the cold. (I also got strange looks in Geelong when I had my jumper on all day). I am trekking in June, and am taking thermals which I purchased at a trekking store (Campco). Cost about $30 per piece (top/bottom) from memory. I wore them when camping last winter, and found them great. They are very lightweight, but toasty warm. I will probably also take trakky daks to wear in the evenings.

You certainly get some funny looks when it's 25 degrees and you're shivering from cold down there. smile.gif

I'll definitely take thermals though. My trek is mid April, so there should still be enough cloud cover around from the end of the wet to keep it a little warmer. I don't think I'd enjoy a cold cloudless night of the dry season at altitude. I'll also most certainly take the survival blanket too.

As for the fishing, I am sure if you ask Gail, she should be able to recommend someone for you to contact.

Yep, I have asked, but no reply so far. I was wondering who else may have known, or who else may have done the same sort of thing and so may have a recommendation.

Hopefully there is a fisho about who has done so. Seeing as I'm going on a trek renowned for being tough I thought I'd finish it by tackling what is widely regarded as the toughest fish on the planet. smile.gif
