Did not mean to scare anyone but came across this site whilst surfing for information on dangerous snakes that are found in PNG. It seemed logical to post it for all and sundry. I believe it is important to register online with the AU Govt. also so they know where we are likely to be in the advent of problems. THat link is on the site I posted previously also.

    Hi Austin,

I just read that you are trekking alone. Good on you man, I mean that's gonna be a mind job I think, but is a great challenge! I believe that attitude is very important when taking on a challenge, either mental or physical, and I think the trail is going to cover both areas pretty comprehensively. You have done extensive training and so I am sure you will be fine.

Here's my 2 cents worth of input into the shorts/longs debate. I am wearing shorts and probably no gaiters although I don't mind the sound of those light-weight ones. (Builders gaiters?) They are the short variety right? I think I know of them. I might check them out but figure also that they will go the same way as any non-essential equipment by about 10am on day two…That is to say to some lucky villager!

Hmm…Ipod…now you've got me thinking…Some grooves to keep me up-beat? Sounds good. I think I'll just leave it home though as having plugs in my ears in that heat would probably drive me to insanity. Austin, how long until you go mate? Me and Justin are hiking out on the 5th Nov but get to PNG on the 3rd Nov.

    Hi 39th,

Thanks for the diary. A good read.

    Hi 39th,

Yeah, I have also heard that more water is better than less. I have a 2L hydration pack and had planned on taking another 1L of staminade or something. I have a secondary bottle. I had figured I could replenish my hydration pack at a stream, drop a tablet and then survive for the half-hour activation time on my 1L supply. I can see the merrits of a 2L secondary supply though. Will think on it.

So, injections huh? Good on you guys…Not a fan I guess. I had heard that two months prior is when to get them, my buddy JP mentioned a place here in Adelaide called Travel Bug which is where I was told the two month thing. I head out to PNG on 2 Nov so will start the, apparently painful, process of injections.

Hope all you guys are getting excited. I am. I will be giving a short presentation to about 50 SA and NT LJ Hooker Franchise owners at the annual owners meeting in September. We are trekking to raise funds for Cystic Fibrosis, LJ Hookers' favorite charity, so I am looking forward to speaking and raising the awareness of the Trail and its importance in the history of this great country. (I hope the owners all open up their cheque books.)

If anyone would like to support our CF fund raiser, contact me for details on how donate. (Donations of $2 or more are tax deductable) and all proceeds go to CF. We are all paying our own way for the trek.

Anyway, enough drum beating…I hope you guys are all well. See you later.

    Hi Austin,

Just read your 'weight post' regarding your pack weight. I figure you should be able to keep your pack down to 15kg or under. Yes, things will add up pretty quickly but if you pack everything you need, then unpack it and discard, pack again then unpack and discard, you will pretty much still have everything you need.

Training with 18 is not a bad idea to condition yourself. 15 should then feel a little easier, but don't kill yourself ok? Water will be about your heaviest thing. I am keeping my own supply down to 3kg at all times ie. 3L. You're on the ball with your weight though at 15 I think.

By the way…Go the Bloody Eagles! rolleyes.gif

    G'day,

Yeah, go for the heavier one. It should set you back about 20 bucks or so. Brand names are not important in this department, pretty much all the same in that price range. I think that if you get caught in the rain it's gonna get you wet regardless. I think's is fair to say cats and dogs type rain is pretty much the norm.

    Hi Mel,

Thanks for your input re: thermals. I think I will take them. I'm packing pretty light elsewhere so it won't be too much of a burden. I'd rather be comfortable and get a good night's sleep and not have ro worry about feezing my ass off. The plastic sheet idea is a good one. Good for laying out equipment also huh?

Can you (or anyone who has been) outline what you added to water and in what quantities? I have been told sugar, salt, gatorade etc. Input please. Also at what times of the day did you do this? Is fresh water available in the morning of each day or must you go down and get it from the creek yourself?

Umm, Austin…Go the Eagles. You bloody beauty! laugh.gif I don't follow the footy so figure I might as well be an honourary Eagle. "Benny"…He's a dead-set legend! wink.gif

Take care all. Enjoy the working week!

    Hi guys,

David thanks for the tip. JP and I have started on the WF Gully to My Lofty track and as he says will be hitting that pretty hard over the next few months. Please supply Goat Track details as I have not heard of it. I thought it was pretty funny no Adelaidians had responded. We're a shy bunch huh? How about Austin huh? Sounds mad! I mean…dedicated to his training regime) rolleyes.gif wink.gif There's something in the water in WA I think. Hey, JP you're going over there in Sept right? Should hook up with Austin for some sand hills!

Mate, 200 minutes for twice up and down sounds like hard work. I think the first time we did it it took us two bloody hours once up and down. We did stop a lot, not 'cause we were tired, we just wanted to enjoy the view! blink.gif I'm actually doing it twice tomorrow (20th July) so will get back to you on how I go. I carry just under 10kg in my pack at this point so hope I make it.

Please post that track details if you can mate. That would be appreciated.

    Hi Paul, (2/7th)

Thanks for your input, much appreciated. Do you think I would need some for of warm clothing in Nov? (For evening I mean.) I had heard that it can get cold at night, although like Austin, I want to pack light. I don't wanna freeze though. My sleeping bag is zero rated and I had thought track pants would be ok if I got that little bit cold. The thermals were recommended so I went with it but think it may be over-kill. I am only taking two sets of clothing, day and night, and have already started discarding stuff I think are only luxury things…Like boots. I'm just taking good old aussie thongs! (Just kidding!) tongue.gif

Can I also ask what/how much training you did prior? (2/7th sounds military) so maybe you were already fit? Did you have much muscle fatigue at days end and if so how did you treat it? I'm figuring some tiger balm? (Beer?)

Hi Austin, yeah, a great market. I'm sure to have something to suit you, if you like you can email me your criteria and I'd be pleased to help. Send me a private message with details or email. The link to my address is on my forum profile.

The Deuters hike pack is pretty neat man, very adjustable and so comfortable. I am planning to do some more hikes, one in Tassie, and there's also a sweet one a mate was telling me about outta The Alice, (Two week trek). I would also like to go to base camp Everest but that might be pushing it. My pack was bought with that in mind so I figured I'd get a really good one capable of handling that little bit more. I also bought a Macpac tent and sleeping bag, again with the intention to get the use out of it. I hunt a lot so certainly will.

Anyway, hope all is well and the training is going well. I'm having some trouble with my right outer knee on descents causing me to favour it and then screw up the left. I'm building it up though so should be fine. No helicopters for me I hope! (Although they are cool to ride in though.)

Anyways, gotta go check out the rest of the forums. See you round. Don't forget Austin, let me know what you're looking for, I'll have it or find it. Most investors are jumping on the gravy train at the moment.

    Hi all, I'm back!

I've been really busy and have come back here and see you guys have been posting like mad! The information and tips are awesome. Sorry if I have not replied to anyone that needed a reply, but work commitments have taken priority. (The market is going well here in Adelaide!)

    I hope you're all well and training hard…Austin…Lost 26Kg? Go man! I'd be happy with 6! blink.gif

I got all my gear last weekend. I bought a Deuters hike pack from Anaconda, and pretty-much everything else from there also. They just opened last week in Adelaide. I was not sure about spending so much on the pack but figured I'd use it again so got a good one. I also bought thermals. Will I use these at night in Nov? And…Would I also need a polar-fleece zip up vest as well? (Don't wanna take to much)

Anyways, no time to linger unfortunately. Take care all.

    Bye.

    Hi Jafa,

Sorry for the late reply- been flat out like a lizard drinking! Yeah, I'm going with Kokoda trekking. They were pretty slow in acknowledging my deposit so I would not be too concerned about your booking. They will get around to it. When did you book for? We are going in Nov 5.

Hey Mel, thanks for your input. Really appreciate it. Keep it comin! BTW laugh.gif RE: your "I'm a chick comment" I'm sure wussy is not an adjective to describe you though. wink.gif

You guys get right into the footy huh? Funny.

    Hope you're all well.

    See ya

    Hi Mel,

Yes, I agree with Austin, I will also use a walking pole obtained from the bush although I believe that the trek co. provide one? On the knife, I figured it was not something that would be used a lot although in my experience, (lot's of hunting) it has always been something I have taken. Maybe a full-blown hunting knife is not necessary but something to cut with may be. (Who knows I may be able to chase down a wild boar?) ph34r.gif I don't know. I guess covering all bases is something I have always done. Your input would be welcome. (Also wondering about foot-care. I have heard many things and was wondering how you guys handled it?)
