• HiNot wanting to "reinvent the wheel" I got the following from the Paddy Pallin site as is generally what I have always followed when buying new or "running in" new boots at 70 I have been through a few pairs.Fitting footwear Once you have narrowed down the options to a handful of boots or shoes, the best way to decide between them is to try them…[Read more]

  • HiIn my case I also went with two of the manufactured telescopic variety poles and found them idea I guess at 70 I am not quite as agile as some of the younger ones doing the trek where one pole may be suitable. When I go again, and I will, I will take the same two poles with me.The pole given me by KTL takes pride of place just inside the front…[Read more]

  • HiI also used the GOGoGear blow up mattress and found it ideal and very easy to blow up and if folded up the way the manufacturer suggests was easy to do so.I found blowing mine up about 50-60% was ideal any higher for me the mattress started to become uncomfortable and I feel one may tend to roll off it if blown right up.I have never used one…[Read more]

  • Hi LornaSorry cannot remember the name of the product that I used I tossed it in the bin when I got to Kokoda as it was a waste of time.I have been told, but could not find it, there is a product called Anti Fog Stick I asked around but could not track it down. What did help at times on my porter Brendan's advice I rolled back the front of my hat…[Read more]

  • Hi LornaI had nothing but problems with mine in fact I went one day without them despite the strain it put on my eyes found it easier without themMy glasses with progressive lenses were a real problem for me and with the rain continually fogging up made it even worse. I took some antifog spray that did not work at all.By far my worse problem were…[Read more]

  • Hi FluppyIf you have only just started this type of exercise even not knowing your age or fitness I would say that you are over doing it.Forget the weight until you can happily manage it with out the back pack and only then slowly add the weight gradually building it up to the 9kgsTo start straight off with any weight I feel would be just asking…[Read more]

HiI do not think that any pack that you may buy will be 100% waterproof I would recommend that you get covers for them to use when raining, available at all good camping stores.Use zip bags or dry sacks for everything that you want to keep dry take a spare couple to put wet items keeping them away from any dry items. If buying bladders separately…[Read more]

  • Hi LornaMy Camelbak day pack had a 2 litre bladder I also carried 2×1 litre aluminium bottle one in the net or bungee pocket what ever you call it on each side of the pack. 4 litres (4KG in weight) was ample for my needs if necessary I had ample opportunities to fill up along the track. I filled up the bladder with water from the 1 litre bottles…[Read more]

  • LornaJust thinking my Camelbak Day Pack has a pocket outside of the pack on each side each taking a 1litre water bottle I feel your day pack may have the same leaving room inside the pack for your gear.Brian

  • Hi LornaYou appear to have every thing covered well whilst different brand your day pack seems the same size as the one I took with much the same as I carried. If with KTL your porter will be quite happy when your group stops to let you get into your main pack so do not carry any more weight than you need to in your day pack.I just carried the very…[Read more]

Hi again FluppyWhen we trekked I think we only saw one or two leeches the entire 9 days trek like wise mossies. But the porters did say when the rain stops the mossies come out, we had rain on 7 of the 9 days.I see more mossies and leeches walking around here than I saw trekking Kokoda.Neither generally worry me and take little notice of them.I do…[Read more]

Hi FluppyI used a 2litre Camelbak on my trek with 2 litre bottles, one each side, this was quite adequate for my needs and I can recommend it to you.I do though query what you are carrying in your day pack I would honestly suggest that you reduce it at least by half and remember if you are with KTL and you have a porter carrying your larger pack…[Read more]
