I can remember a couple of areas where the track was narrow & a steep drop off was to either side but remember in the unlikely event that u go over the side if tired etc lots of trees prevent you going all the way down. you will slip over heaps of times so you may as well get used to it. I also have a fear of heights i.e. looking over a cliff, but it is such an amazing experience you won't even think of it
just get in there & do itAnzac

My mates & i did the track July 04 and i would strongly suggest that you do a guided tour for many reasons No.1 being that you come out the other side.
Also do not underestimate the value of local knowledge in sourcing accomodation and food. The best part about hiring local people as guides and carriers is giving them valuable employment and learning what wonderful people they are. If you have any questions i frequently check this forum and will also do the track again one day.Cheers

MemberHi all
My uncle also served in the 2/7th he was wounded in action at komiatum & later died in a field hospital at Buna, he was buried at Cape Endanaire and later moved to Bomana (Died 20th Sept 1943 aged 19) It was a very moving experience to visit his grave at Bomana prior to trekking Kokoda last July and staying at Buna.
I would be interested in visiting the area in which he fought.Regards
Paul

MemberHi all
I had all of these questions in my mind before i went and the experience showed that gore tex lined boots are the best mine were La Sportiva and were worn in approx 6 months prior, good woollen socks and use light sock liners.
absoloutely no blisters or sweat problems we were on the track 3rd July and it was the wettest it had been in many years & track was very boggy. luckily not much rain on us.Cheers

MemberHi Todd
I originally was going on my own and ended up with a group of six mates, just keep letting people know what u are doing and watch it grow.
we walked from Moresby to Kokoda then to Buna & Gona and when people ask i tell them it was the greatest thing i have done in my life.Cheers m8

MemberHi Allison
Was interested in your advise of fitness levels required to do the track I am 45 and recently climbed Mt Barney in SE Qld (8.5 hour walk & is rated one of the longest & hardest treks in QLD & I was totally gone by the end of the day) What i am wondering is how hard is each day on the trail ?
I train a minimum of 3 times a week, walking hills around the area i work in Bris with pack for approx 1 hr 20 min, will cycle on w/ends for 20 – 30 klm & also a walk on w/end climbing a local 700 mtr mountain 2 to 3 times.
Basically am trying to find out am i doing enough (we depart on 3rd july)
Cheers

MemberGiday Aussie
Well it seems that my little trek group of one must be on steriods as it is growing
it is now a possible 8 & july/august is the time, word of mouth seems to work
could you please advise (as most want to do this) is an extension to Buna & Gona available? also accomodation in Port Moresby seems to be a point of concern for some (mainly security) but I am sure a lot of what we hear in Aussie is blown up by the media.
Anyway nothing is going to stop me from going, just for interest sake recieved records from War Memorial in relation to my Uncles service detailing where he was when wounded and later died in field hospital, so it just fuels my desire to go to PNG.Regards

MemberAussie (Gail)
Could you please send me costings and details on trip and finally i may have another 2 people coming along (hopefully) do you have set dates ? and packages as the different offerings from some groups are confusing. Any information would be appreciated (you may have the info somewhere on the site but I am somewhat inept on finding my way about on the computer)
Regards

MemberThanks Muppie & Aussie for your replies
It is a fantastic web site & is sure providing me with a lot of info, Aussie you must have done a lot of research for the Bomana listings and yes my uncle is there and all details are correct, it will be a very emotional moment for me when i actually stand at his grave site as since i was a kid i have been going to do this. I will probably bore u guys to tears with a lot of questions as to who, what & how I plan this trip and hope u will help with some probably dumb questions, once again thank you for your replies will see u soon
