39thdecendant replied to the topic Toilet Seat Covers in the forum Trek Preparation 17 years ago
There were toilet seats at Isurava Memorial, wish I had found these before I went up, even the ones at Kokoda were a bit iffy! Have bought some for next time though….. and as females we would have had more encounters with THE TOILET than males.. The funniest thing I saw was one of our group, who obviously hadn't been before , head into the…[Read more]

Get yourself a good quality knee brace from a sports shop, one which straps around your knee, this should give you some good support, take some tiger balm with you to rub your knee at night to keep the heat in, but dont' rub it in in the morning and put the guard on, you will get a rash. I started taking glucosamine & fish oil which helped. I also…[Read more]

oops sorry Stewart, that didn't read as it should, am no way suggesting that you or your friends are idiots for wanting to undertake the trek on your own, I was just relaying a conversation between two brothers, one who is in the defense force and one who had done the track. again I would be really interested in hearing how your trek went, the…[Read more]

If you are wanting to go the way the diggers did, then you would start at Owers and trek to Kokoda. KTL are a good trekking company, but it really is personal choice. I went with Nugini Holidays, and personally wouldn't recommend them, although they did do all the accomodation bookings for us. The plus with KTL is obviously the web site, it would…[Read more]

39thdecendant replied to the topic Extra Luggage in the forum General Discussions 17 years, 3 months ago
Usually there is a secure area in the hotel you will be staying for your luggage, as well as security boxes for your money, valuables etc. You will only need about K100.00 with you, in small notes and change, the natives put out cool drinks etc at the villages and these are usually about K5.00Nettie

My apologies, the walk is not coinciding with the opening, it is held annually the Sunday before ANZAC Day as the lead in to ANZAC Day. The Wall will be on display for the Walk as a work in progress and completion is not due till Jul/Aug this year, subject to weather and construction progress. If you are interested, I have attached a flyer on the…[Read more]
39thdecendant replied to the topic Washing And Pollution? in the forum Trek Preparation 17 years, 3 months ago
Hi Brian,If you go to a good camping shop, they have a bio-degradable liquid soap which anthony & I used. It worked really well for us, though not good for hair washing. Bear in mind that the natives use ordinary soap in the same water, when they are washing their clothes etc and have been for years.Nettie

Hi Bobo,I see no-one has answered you. Yu won't need Japanses Encephalitis, but you will need tetnus, typhiod and polio. Make sure you have them in plenty of time as they are a course of needles.cheersnettie
39thdecendant replied to the topic Tents Optional? in the forum General Discussions 17 years, 3 months ago
I would take a tent. If your tour operator is supplying tents, I would still take your own, make sure you water proof it before you go.. there is not plenty of accomodation along the track. Usually the camping is first in, best dressed, you would hate to get to a point, discover several other trekking companies there ahead of you and then find out…[Read more]

Hi Khorr,There is very little public transport, there are local trucks which go to ower's. If you contact one of the trekking companies, they may be able to help you get there, at a cost. i am not sure how they would accept this, but you MAY be able to hook up with one of their treks and walk with them. BOOK YOUR ACCOMODATION BEFORE YOU GO..…[Read more]

Hi Khorr,I have thought of how to answer your post,You have obviously bought your ticket if you are leaving in a weeks time, and I suppose that there would be very little anyone could say to change your mind but I do I agree with Brian, you would be one very foolish boy to attempt to do the Kokoda Track solo. New Guinea is still a very primitive…[Read more]
