make up a solution of bi carb of soda and warm water, put this in the bladder and turn it upside down so that it runs into the hose, leave it for about an hour and then rinse well with warm water, pushing it through the hose, that's what worked with mine. good luckNettie

Hi Stewart,I got Kina through Flight Centre travel agents, you will never get the exchange rate that is advertised, I found that out when I recently went to Hawaii, after hunting around I found Flight Centre had the best exchange rate, and didn't charge me a fortune, Australia Post wasn't too bad either. Don't wait till you get to Moresby, it's…[Read more]

Hi ryan,my son & I just used a pair of cotton gardening gloves we picked up at Bunnings, they worked fine, and we didn't find that they made our hands sweat at all. We both used walking sticks the natives cut for us.Nettie
39thdecendant replied to the topic Money in the forum Trek Preparation 16 years, 9 months ago
Hi cdt Smith,You won't need much Kina on the track, about K50 would do, that's mainly if you want to buy some fruit or drinks that the natives sell in the villages, just make sure you keep it in a secure place and it is in smal change. Most things cost K5.00 and that natives won't have change. There is a small canteen at Kokoda that also sells…[Read more]

I took 1 pair of skins, they dry pretty fast, but even if they are a little wet, and it's a good wake up call high up to put on damp clothes, anyway, within 5 mins of walking, you won't feel it..nettie

39thdecendant replied to the topic Expected Weather Conditions? in the forum Trek Preparation 16 years, 10 months ago
the weather is much the same all year, except in the wet season ( our summer) when it pours. it will be extreamly hot and humid at the lower ends of the track and quite cold at night the higher up you get. You won't need warm clothes during the day, but you will need something warm for night at the higher points. Even though it is their dry…[Read more]

Hi Fluppy,You will not need anything out of your pack when you are walking, if you pack in your day pack your snacks for the day, water, sun lotion, mozzy stuff, raincoat. So you shouldn't need to take anything out of your main pack once you start, after the first day you will have a better idea of what you will need. There were toilet seats at Isurava Memorial, wish I had found these before I went up, even the ones at Kokoda were a bit iffy! Have bought some for next time though….. and as females we would have had more encounters with THE TOILET than males..
