MemberThe Kokoda Track is becoming increasingly popular amongst fit and healthy Australians as the trekking adventure they must do, whether it be for the war history of the Kokoda Campaign, adventure, culture or eco-tourism. The local communities appreciate trekkers and will make you feel most welcome along the entire route of the trek, being 96 km from Kokoda to Owers' Corner.
In 2000, the Government and landowners realized that they had a potential opportunity for improving their subsistence way of life by encouraging sustainable tourism. For this reason the Kokoda Track Local-level Government Special Purposes Authority (Kokoda Track Authority) or (KTA) was established by a decision of the National Executive Council of the National Government and proclaimed by the Head of State, the Governor-General, in June 2003.
In May, 2004 KTA commenced operation under an interim arrangement and on 9 December, 2004, its Management Committee was officially sworn in. The prime object of KTA is to focus on the significance of the Kokoda Track due to its part in World War II and promote this legacy for present and future generations and promote tourism related acrtivities.
As such, KTA's approved Constitution stipulates that the Authority is to assist the Koiari and Kokoda RLLGs in carrying out their functions generally within the area of the Kokoda Track; promote trekking and tourism related activities in the Kokoda Track Area; administer, facilitate, ensure and or oversee the implementation of the developments and other projects in the Kokoda Track Area; collect, manage and use development revenues collected from fee paying trekkers and other sources; consult with landowners on their needs and priorities; etc.
Both Kokoda and Koiari Rural Local-level Governments have passed identical laws entitled " Kokoda Track Permit Law 2005" which impose trek fees upon all trekkers who walk the Kokoda Track and that such fees are to be paid to the Kokoda Track Authority – Trek Permit Account at the Bank of South Pacific, Douglas Street Port Moresby.
The administration of the Kokoda Track Authority till the end of 2005 has been run by Warren Bartlett (CEO) assisted by their Chairman Alfred Amuli and a number of other Management Committee Members.
In 2006, this will change with the opening of a Port Moresby and Kokoda office, the employment of administrative staff and three Rangers who will patrol the Kokoda Track and check trekkers for their valid KTA Trek Permit.
Those who are caught (hopefully at the Kokoda or Owers' Corner ends of the Track before they commence walking) will be stopped until the full trek fees and penalties are paid to the Port Moresby or Kokoda offices.
