Hi all, my husband and I have booked to do the trek in October this year and would like some training info on the best places in and around Perth. Obviously we are using Jacobs ladder and a few steep roads but are looking for training that has worked for others.

    hi lil,

i to will be doing the trek in october and have been training for the past 6 or so months. I have concentrating on doing strength and endurance type training, similar to bootcamp style training. Over the next 4/5 months i will be concentrating on sand hill runs and cross country runs. i figure the fitter you are before the trek, the more enjoyment you will get.

Although i dont live in perth, i travel to perth on weekends ( to watch my beloved eagles) i live in australind. if ever you feel the urge to come down this way, ive got a KILLER hill i can take you to to train.

so if you are doing the trek in october, chances are i will be there the same time as you – depending on who you are going with !!

    Hey Lil,

Boss Meri (BM) has given some good training tips regarding steps (and lots of them). If you go to my topic "Brand new trekker" you will find them there. It all sounds like a lot of hard work, but obviously works! Austin sounds like he's got the whole think sussed, so maybe it would be worth hooking up with him depending on locality.

Hey jafa (Duncan) – Im in Australind so about 7 -8 hrs drive away from Kal. Im doing the trek commencing 8th October with a Company based in Perth – Kokoda Treks and Tours (Frank Taylor) he is a legand apparently. Have spoken with some people who have gone with his Company and have only heard really good reports.

I to am an eagles supporter and member, so make the trip to perth every home game to watch them win !! Last week was a shocker !! It would be great to have another fellow eagles supporter doin the trek with me. I dont know anyone else on our trek as i have arranged this on my own. So my trek begins October 8th, visit his website at http://www.arach.net.au/users/kokoda and see what you think.

I have some good friends living in my town who hail from Kal – perhaps we have some common friends – wouldnt that be weird !!

    Hi
We are also Perth Trekkers and our trek commences on July 30. We are return trekkers from 2006 but unfortunately only completed about half the trek last year due to illness. My husband had a slight virus before we left but once on the trek, became quite ill very quickly so we made the decision to evacuate. But here we are back again this year and looking forward to it. As far as training goes we are not training the same as we did last year. What we found on the track was we needed to have done a lot more climbing so this year we have focussed on Jacobs ladder which is a set of steps (242 of them) here in Perth well known for training on. We regularly meet people there who are training for Kokoda and trekking in Nepal. Currently we are on Jacobs for an hour every day, double steps, non stop. We can usually go up and down about 12 times in the hour. On the weekend we drive up to Bells Rapids and get off the main track and climb the hills with the kangaroos! We do that for about 2 – 3 hours both Saturday and Sunday. We will also take a drive to Bluff Knoll before we leave and do that twice in one day.
Having done the trek before, theres no surprises for us this year so we hope to be well prepared. Kokoda is not a walk, its a climb so if you keep that in mind when training and stay on the hills or stairs as much as possible, you will be strong enough. Females generally have a problem with leg strength so get those thigh muscles as strong as possible. We are both in our late 40's, working full time, with 3 grown kids so we have a very full schedule. This is a challenge we are passionate about, and so much more than just the track. The people there are wonderful and its a very humbling experience to be there. We are counting the days now!
