Yuley
MemberHello,
I am doing Kokoda in the next month, and have one last thing to get… Underwear!
I have a pair of bike shorts to wear under my shorts, however I don't feel comfortable "freeballing" underneath them… what sort of underwear should I look for?
I obviously want to stay away from Cotton, how is Nylon or Lycra any better?
What have other people done???
Thanking you in anticipation.
Cheers,
Michael

MemberHi Karen – and where would one be able to buy this fine grade NZ wooly underwear?
I am interested in this as I will be needing to buy some for when I trek Kokoda.

MemberHi Karen,
Thank you for your reply.
I always thought that woolen underwear keeps you warm??? like thermals?
Or is there woolen underwear around that is a form of a brief?
Also to echo Fluppy, where abouts should I be looking for these?
Thanks Again.

MemberHi Michael
Pls see my reply in the Topic of 'Skins'.
Also can't comment on the wool, but bow to KT's knowledge & experience and will try it sometime. Basic Jocks from Big W worked for me and I tried the bike shorts towards the end and they were comfortable as well.
Try them out when you are Trek training.
Cheers

MemberHi Yuley,
I used bike shorts for my trek in April and they were great. They were only cheap ones ($10 @ Aldi) and had the chamois insert. I took 2 pair and washed and alternated every day, I had to wear them wet a couple of times due to rainbut you get used to that pretty quick. At night I just had a light weight pair of trek pants and went "commando"
. I should point out that for the sake of modesty I wore light weight hiking shorts over the top during the day and there was no sign of chaffing
.
Good Luck.06/07/2008 at 7:08 am #100292KarenT
MemberJust completed trek wearing the wool undies and skins over them and then trek pants, undies dried quicker than anything else, but just get used to putting on wet clothes even if it is not raining.

MemberLycra bike shorts without padding with nothing underneath were the go for me. worked well. I took two pairs and only wore them under lightweight shorts. Day Clothes were always wet but that was ok- you did get used to it

MemberWhy go to all the expense? Long loose pants and free balling has done me for years of trekking in FNQ. This worked well on Kokoda.

MemberWell freeballing as you say isn't really the best during physical activity. You could end up with a testicular hernia. I hear they're extremely painful. You should try for some if not minimal coverage. Maybe even some silky smooth style mens underwear. Something in there could do the trick honestly.

MemberI'm with KT 100% on this. Merino boxers are a must have for Kokoda. Icebreaker are ok, but i personally prefer Earth Sea Sky. ESS make awesome merino boxer/boyleg undies with 5% lycra which helps retain the shape and fit. I swear by them and find the boxer style best cos you can still wear it down to the river and feel covered. if you are in sydney, trek and travel at 447 kent st always have them in stock along with icebreaker briefs if thats more your style.
