So long as you clean all mud off it, and declare it as a "carving", you will have no problems at all. It will go through as a "long item" so will not be on the carousel when you land – you will have to go to a different pick up point to get your stick (not too much hassle – I managed OK). Customs hardly looked twice at it.

Hi Rocky. there must be over 2000 of these walking poles in Australia now and I have not received an email from a trekker saying they had hassles getting them through customs. Before you depart your hotel you will have to give it the once over with a wet cloth to make sure you remove any loose dirt and consign it with your luggage.

In fact a lot of people worry more about their walking stick then they do about their gear when returning home. I had one group of trekkers who had to leave some of their gear behind in Kokoda to follow later. Their main concern was that their walking sticks did not get lost!

I have often heard the comment…thanks for the stick but we have brought our own metal walking poles. We reply by saying they are so lightweight that take them along with the wooden one and trial them. If you decide to use the wooden carved stick then the others get attached to the pack and being so light it really makes no difference to the overall weight carried. More often then not, trekker after trekker ends up walking with the carved pole. Boys often carve their names in them and before long they become a momento of your trek.

I had one guy once loose his when moving house and phoned up for another one so he was not the odd one out when the group all got together for a reunion and did a walk here in OZ together.
