MemberI have designed two treks so that trekkers can come and walk the trail and then continue to see other parts of PNG before returning back to Australia.
On an annual basis, PNG celebrates their independence. It is held on the 15, 16 & 17th September each year.
In Port Moresby they have what is called The Hiri Moale Festival. The best day to attend this is Saturday 16th September when topless women in traditional dress dance at Ela Beach. During the course of the morning they welcome a lakatoi (traditionally built boat) refer photograph below:

MemberYou could attend the Hiri Moale Festival in the morning and then travel in the afternoon up to Goroka and overnight. The next morning attend the Goroka Show. For anyone who loves photography you wont be disappointed.

MemberThe Goroka Show main days are Saturday & Sunday. Many different tribes are invited to the Goroka Showground where they perform for the judges. You are more than welcome to walk around and take photographs. You would only need to attend on either of these days.
Last year I helped bring to PNG a rich Taiwanese businessman by the name of Frank Lin. Frank travelled up to the Sepik River, back via Madang, up to Goroka by PMV (public bus) and back to Port Moresby. He handed over to me copies of all his photographs, approximately 1500 of them all taken on a Canon 300D digital camera. If you wanted to view any of these photographs,

MemberThe next day on the Monday you could travel up to Mt Hagen and fly out to Simbai for a cultural experience like no other. There you can be accommodated in a guesthouse and witness something truly unique.
I have just got off the phone after talking with Steven Mago who was invited to this years inaugural Kalam Cultural Festival.
Simbai, with a population of about 30,000, is a remote forgotten backwater of PNG that is still very much untouched and unexplored but has a special place in PNG history. The Simbai cultural show goes on for 5 days or more. If you would like to read more about this years cultural event, PLEASE CLICK HERE:

MemberTrek 181: Kokoda; Goroka Show; Hiri Moale Festival; Simbai Cultural Experience
Date of trek: 6 September 2006 – 14 September 2006
This trek is designed so that you fly into Kokoda on Wednesday 6th September and overnight at Rusty's Kokoda Family Block. The next day you walk up to Isurava where you will spend your 2nd night. On Thursday 14th September you finish your trek at Ower's Corner.
On the completion of your trek, you can then join in PNG's Independent Anniversary Celebrations.
