Can anyone tell me if the kokoda trek is as physically demanding as the trek to Everest base camp?

    Hi Helenc

My name is Alison. I have been to Kokoda and I can tell you it is quiet an exhausting task. You don't really know what you are in for till you get out there. However, I would not know to what extent compared to the trek to Everest base camp as I haven't been to Everest myself. With Kokoda there is a certain Level of fitness you need to get used to before actually heading out on the track.

I have done bike exercising, walking up and down the hill, running and walking long distances just so I could get used to the strain in my body or build up muscles. I had a last minute training just in three weeks before the trek. You don't have to be a superfit athlete but with Kokoda, training before the trek is essential.

    Hi Helen,

Basically you gotta be able to walk for about 4-5 hours a day (for 9 day trek) for 9 days. The walk isn't on a flat terrain. You'll sometimes climb up and up and up, and sometimes down down down. Sometimes you need to cross rivers as well.

The path on the Kokoda Trail is a well worn track, with steps.

Sometimes it does get to a high altitude but nobody ever needs any special oxygen gear, unlike Mt Everest.

I hope this helps giving you some idea about it.

    Cheers

    Hi Helen,

The best training is stairs, and stax of them. 30 min – 1 hours, 3-5 times a week. The best type are similar to a high rise building in the cities. (7-10 floors)
You can also do a long walk on the weekend with your pack 10-15km.
Most of the track is up and down, up and down and gain up and down until Owers Corner.

    enjoy
