The guide for this trek is Christopher Talanoa who is the son of a retired bishop and who hails from Kokoda. Christopher is Russell Eroro's eldest sisters son. Walking the track is a nice change for him as for several months he has been driving a PMV (public motor vehicle) truck up and down the road from Kokoda to Popondetta starting work at 2am and finishing at 9:30p 6 days in a row. If you saw the road you would know what his workload has been!

On their first night trekkers reached Ua'Ule Creek. Last night was spent at Banana Camp just short of Naoro. I spoke with Christopher and James McMillan this morning and everyone is enjoying their trek however John has decided its not in his best interest to continue so will fly out by chopper sometime today. The others should reach Menari later this afternoon where they will spend tonight.

Looking Good Kylie! Keeping track of you. B.xx P.xx

Just heard from the track that the chopper is circulating overhead but due to cloud cover it may not be able to land. Will keep checking and advise if and when picked up.

We said our farewells to the food porters who led off down the hill closely followed by trekkers with personal porters:

Lachlan, Trek looks great! Lolly is enjoying the photographic updates of her 'daddy on a bushwalk' (lol). Take care, Kate xo.

James met up with Garni Bore who was a surprise for him as he thought until recently that he was going to have to carry his pack:

    Hi my love
Looking good out there and soooooo looking forward to seeing you back home. Just found from Aunty Mary that Grandad Jennings was a medic on the trek. The locals called him Dr Cut em Up. He has a diary of the experience some where, but he never talked about it when he got home. Is it any wonder. Theres a photo of him on the trek at the war mem in the ACT. What an amazing family histroy my family has on both sides.
love you heaps and we can't wait to see you. All three of us. xxxxxxxxx

Jim. You look like a dwarf next to your children, perhaps you should have stood up the hill! Looking good, can't wait to hear all the stories from your trek. Ryan, I guess I'll call you Lachlan from now on, it suits you. smile.gif
    Prayers for safe travel! xo

Been up bright and early in anticipation of John getting airlifted off the track. The first news was at 5:30am saying it was windy and they were afraid the chopper would not get in. Worry set in as I later talked to James McMillan.

However luck was on our side as the chopper finally found its way down and landed, picked up John and as I type this he would be at the Pacific International Hospital having his checkup.

The last words from James, when he gets back can you make sure he is taken care of, naturally I answered yes! So James and Lachlan have now started to pay catch up to others members in their trek.

Last night the other trekkers spent the night at a village called Menari. Harold Hauro a guide in his own right, took over the this group when Christopher remained behind to take care of John.

Harold was on the radio after he heard of the successful pick up and him and Christopher were then discussing the strategy for today. It was decided Harold move on to Efogi the half way point and they will try and reach there later this afternoon. Failing that they will stop at Menari for the night.

Either Amy or Kylie are experiencing knee problems but apart from that, all is well.

They are very good at Pacific International so no doubt will do several tests on him today.

I think it must be Amy as it was mentioned a female was experiencing knee problems late in the day but apart from that, all is well.

    Jimmy,
Need to know what has happened. Been reading the updates and we are not to sure what has been happening. We understand that they don't want to stress us, but this is pop's and we need to know what's happened.
You make sure you take care of your self. Love you heaps. xxxxxx

I have been talking to John who is now at the Pacific International Hospital in good hands. When we spoke he was relaxing waiting on them to do some tests to see what is the problem. He mentioned he was feeling a little dizzy.

To speak to him direct, the phone number is: 0011675 323 4400. When the number answers ask for the 'Emergency' Ward when someone else will answer. Then ask to speak to John McMillan.

I think we can all relax somewhat as I am pretty sure James or Lachlan would not have opted to continue their trek if he had been in a critical condition.
