Update 20th July: Wallace called in from Imita Ridge earlier today to say they all enjoyed last night and that they were on the move and had reached Imita Ridge.

At this stage the women are doing it tougher then the men but no problems whatsoever as they move along at their own pace.

HI Margie, Kevvie, Alice, Sybil and Frank

Sounds as if you are off to a great start. The photos are great and gives some of us a good idea back here of what you've accomplished so far. Keep going, absorb and take in the surrounds of what our soldiers went through. Stay focussed and keep climbing. Will look forward to the next update.

Have you used the cow prodder on Alice yet??

    Take care and best wishes

    Hi Alice & fellow trekkers,

Well you're finally there, Calendar Girl. Not drinking too much water I hope. Didn't sneak a bottle of wine in your pack?? laugh.gif Enjoy you're journey and think about how hard it would have been for our soldiers all those years ago, trying to keep alive while fighting a war. It's a special thing you are all doing.
    All the best,keep safe

Hi Kev, Margie, Alice, Sibyl and Frank

Well done ………… so far. Am I a little bit jealous I didn't go too? I'll wait and see. The pictures and messages are great. It just shows that even in the jungles of Papua New Guinea you can't get away from it all.

Looking forward to hearing how you went today – come on girls! Pick up the slack!

    Love, June

Last night and again this morning, we met up with our latest group of trekkers who headed out this morning from Owers' Corner. This group were recommended to trek with us by Brian Beamish a regular contributor to our forum. Brian suggested they request Wallace Lemeki as their guide and Brendan Buka as a personal porter. There wish was granted and today Kevin would have been introduced to Brendan who is famous in these parts for winning several of our races and the current record holder in 16:34 from Owers' to Kokoda.

Trekkers walking in the group include :

    • Kevin Woodward – porter – Brendan Buka
    • Alice Bennet-Alder – porter – Chris Lahai
    • Sybil J Dwyer – porter – Hobert Keke
    • Margaret Low – porter – Winnie Pore
    • Frank Dwyer – porter – Evan Myosi

Food Porters: Wayne Urina; Kennedy Buka; Deshon Harika; Hensley; Michael Havu; Fresser from (Sairope)

Last night at the Gateway Hotel, Kevin read out the following poem:

    KOKODA PRAYER:

It is with great humility and intrepidation that we begin this journey today, always mindful of the sacred nature of the track where many Australian soldiers gave their lives for our freedom.

We not only do this in memory of them, but to experience in some small way the difficulties that they encourntered.

God give us the strength and mental energy to complete this trek and to do honour to those who gave their lives for us.

    Amen

    Kev,

Looks like the Karate Kid is fit and well.

Hope the trek is living up to your expectations.

    Hi Kev,

Sounds like everything is going well. Plenty of mud on the track by the looks of it. Forget driving, you will probably want to walk to Birdsville after doing Kokoda, at least it would be flat. Hope everything goes well for the rest of the trip. Great to have this website to keep up to date with your progress.

    All the best

Update 21st July: We heard from the track today at Maguli Ridge that the trek was going along as planned and that one woman was toughing it out a bit harder then the rest but was ok.

Plan a) was to reach Menari. Plan b) was Agulogo.

Congratulations to all on your efforts so far.

To Sybil, Alice and Margie – ladies, we know that you can make it.

To Frank and Kevin – remember to "stop and smell the roses" occasionally.

We're looking forward to hearing lots of stories on your return.

Best wishes for the rest of your trek,
    Michelle and Emma
