Last night and again this morning, we met up with our latest group of trekkers who headed out this morning from Owers' Corner. This group were recommended to trek with us by Brian Beamish a regular contributor to our forum. Brian suggested they request Wallace Lemeki as their guide and Brendan Buka as a personal porter. Their wish was granted and today Kevin would have been introduced to Brendan who is famous in these parts for winning several of our races and the current record holder in 16:34 from Owers' to Kokoda.

Trekkers walking in the group include :

[*]Kevin Woodward – porter – Brendan Buka
      [*]Alice Bennet-Alder – porter – Chris Lahai
[*]Sybil J Dwyer – porter – Hobert Keke
[*]Margaret Low – porter – Winnie Pore
[*]Frank Dwyer – porter – Evan Myosi

Food Porters: Wayne Urina; Kennedy Buka; Deshon Harika; Hensley; Michael Havu; Fresser from (Sairope)

Last night at the Gateway Hotel, Kevin read out the following poem:

It is with great humility and intrepidation that we begin this journey today, always mindful of the sacred nature of the track where many Australian soldiers gave their lives for our freedom.

We not only do this in memory of them, but to experience in some small way the difficulties that they encourntered.

God give us the strength and mental energy to complete this trek and to do honour to those who gave their lives for us.

    Amen

19th July: We heard from the track that trekkers had safely reached 'Goodwater' where they had lunch around 1pm today. With a large group ahead of them, trekkers were asked if they wanted to keep walking or stop for the day at Goodwater. Apparently they all opted to keep walked so will have to wait for another update to see where they reached to spend the night. Ua'Ule Creek was discussed but the guides were worried it may have been full with the other large group walking in the same direction.

8pm Update: Sorry, wrong message posted before as I just received a sat phone call to say they decided to stop at 'Goodwater' campsite. Tonight they had for dinner some spaghetti bolognese and when I was talking I could hear our boys singing away in the background. All trekkers were doing ok up until they stopped for the day.

    Hi Kevin and Team

On your way at last I know that with all the dedicated training you have put in that it will now pay off as you are all in for what was for me a life changing expereince.

Do enjoy every minute of it, make new freinds with the boys and take many photos.

Do say good day to my mates Brendan and Wallace who I owe a lot, true angels as far as far I am concerned for without thier help and dedication to the job I well may not have made it.

I am sending this message via the mobile network, 2 months into our current adventure travelling around Australia now in Carnarvon WA where just at this moment it is lightly raining and cold. Do hope that you have a dry trek.

Will check out on you daily as long as we have a connection to the internet.

    Enjoy the expereince

    Brian

Tomorrow picture them walking up this hill as they commence their climb towards Imita Ridge. Tomorrow night they may find themselves at Ioribaiwa Village or Ofi Creek.
