Anyone have any info on the Kokoda Challenge, the non-stop run/walk on the 30/31 August…self supported?, getting to the start? self guided?

Hi there, the Kokoda Challenge Race will commence at 7am at Owers' Corner. You can either stay up there the night in a tent along with the majority of the PNG competitors or overnight in a hotel in Port Moresby. Unfortunately due to the proximity of Owers' Corner and the road conditions getting there, we have to leave Port Moresby around 4:30am.

    There are 8 checkpoints:

    1. Ioribaiwa
    2. Naoro
    3. Menari
    4. Efogi
    5. Myola Junction
    6. Eora Creek
    7. Isurava
    8. Kovelo

There is always food such as bananas/tea/coffee/local vegetables/rice and the likes at these checkpoints but we ask all overseas competitors to bring their own food. Most in the past have brought power gels to last them for 24 hours.

Our local guides and porters man the checkpoints with hand held radios and report in as competitors pass by. The previous checkpoint will not move off until all competitors have gone past.

Everyone has to self guide themselves. All competitors will receive Bill James book on KOKODA which has a map inside the back cover.

Competitors are then flown back to Port Moresby after completion of the race.

Hi Lozza, I did the race last year, my race number was 12. It was a fantastic experience. If you are thinking of doing it, get started with your training, you'll have nearly 100km to cover over extremely hilly terrain. And it could be muddy and wet too. Do long runs; gym work to build up quad strength and try to train at night to get used to staying awake. I slept while on the track, but others went straight through.

Go to http://www.kokodatrail.com.au/forums/index…745&hl=race for some photos and race reports.

The race is on at the end of August again this year. My husband, Larry and our mate, Mike LeRoux, are both thinking of doing it again. I'm going to walk it the week before and wait for them at the finish.
