MemberToday our first trek of 2008 headed out from Owers' Corner, two uni students and a photographer. Trekkers are made up as follows:
Amy Nicol, Roland Alexander and his friend Jeremy Zimet
Last night we picked up Amy from the Magila Hotel and met up with Roland and Jeremy at the Gateway Hotel and sat around the swimming pool with their guide Andrew and his two brothers Freddy and Horace Yauga.
We decided on a 9:30 – 10am start due to the possibility of a wet road heading out to Owers' Corner but as it turned out the road was quite good today and they got all the way to the hill leading down to the Archway.
Some photographs we took this morning on the way out to Owers' Corner:

MemberUpdate 11th January: Trekkers spent their first night at Goodwater before moving their way up to Ofi Creek where they spent last night.
Unfortunately for Roland he has had to pull out due to a medical problem and was picked up this morning by helicopter.
Amy and Jeremy are doing just fine. Trekkers moved off earlier this morning to head to Nauro where they will overnight.

MemberHello Gail and KTL Team
Happy New Year to you Gail and I hope Christmas was good for you.
Glad to read that you have started again for 2008 and it doesn't seem like nearly 3 years since we did your Trek. How I would love to be there again.
I log in at least once a week to read all your news and view the new Trekkers photos with interest, good luck to them all.
Cheers
Waza (Trek 83 – ANZAC at Isurava)

Memberthanks Waza. We have had trekkers mention they thought you worked for KTL as they often see your name on our website. All the best for 2008 from us at Kokoda Trekking.
Update Saturday 12th January: Andrew called in by sat phone today from Brigade Hill giving us a trek update.
They spent a night at Nauro and yesterday moved onto Menari where they overnighted. Later this afternoon they will walk into Efogi where they will spend the night.
All are doing ok. Jeremy it seems has blisters on his heels but so far so good!

MemberHi Gail
Just wondering if the great photos that you are showing along the track that Trek 399 are taking are photos that they have taken themselves or are they from your library?
If they are taken by the group being a bit of a "techo" myself I am wondering how they are getting them to you?
I personally via Amateur Radio have sent photos using my radio equipment around the globe, we also have Amateur Radiio satellites and more recently a Amateur Radio"repeater" station on the Earth Station circling the globe that I can be used also.
Very interested if coimg from the Trek 399 themselves how they are getting them to you?
For those interested who may read this my Amateur Radio callsign is VK4BBS.
Looking forward very much to walking with you in September this year.
Regards Brian

MemberHi Brian, when the trek headed out our guide took photographs at Bomana and Owers' Corner. He then changed the memory card and our driver brought it back to me in Port Moresby. The new memory card is with the camera on the track. Our guide will continue snapping pics all the way until they board their flight back in from Kokoda and the camera will return with the trekkers. I will then upload pics from their trek.
As for the ones of the track itself, they are from my library of photographs. When I get a message that they are at a certain place I look through my pics and post so family and friends back home can follow their progress.
From the best of my knowledge we are the only trekking company to offer 'live' updates of a trek.

MemberUpdate Saturday 12th January: Andrew Yauga our trek guide, called in by two way radio to report they had reached Efogi as planned and that they were relaxing at Landy Noel's guesthouse area.
Not too sure whether they will walk to Kagi or Naduri tomorrow. Kagi is the harder longer route but our preferred option.

Pic 1: inside the guesthouse they will sleep tonight on MATTRESSES, who said they are doing it tough?
Pic 2: they will even have a dining room tonight to sit and enjoy their meal10136_Efogi_2_Hilton.jpg

Pic 3: The shower at Efogi (background) is made out of a water tank which works quite well. There is also a tap to wash clothes
Pic 4: Horace Yauga arrives in Efogi when he entered our race in 2006. Horace is one of the porters on this trek. In 2006 Horace finished 4th overall in a time of 20 Hours 39 minutes from Owers' Corner to Kokoda – he promised not to take them that fast on this trek!

MemberUpdate Monday 14th January: We heard from our guide Andrew today from the Kokoda Gap. Everyone was still doing ok but Amy has been struggling a little.
Last week they spent the night at Myola Junction. Tonight they will be at Eora Creek where they will camp listening to the sound of rushing water in the background.

MemberUpdate 15th January: Trekkers walked out in Kokoda today and will fly back in tomorrow with Airlines of PNG.
Its very windy here today and radio communication is almost nil however Andrew our guide managed to get through on a sat phone around midday saying they were t Deneki and heading for Kokoda.
Tonight they are at Russell's Eroro's family block in Kokoda where they will no doubt be relaxing in one of the win haus's on their family block.
