MemberI have just returned from a 2 day walk on the Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk. It's a brilliant walk and I think is a great way to have a dress rehearsal, so to speak. I basically packed what I plan to take to Kokoda plus a tent and off we went. Only having 2 days to spare for the walk we figured the best route would be from Baroon Dam to Flaxton walkers camp stay overnight and walk back the next day. A round trip of approx 32km. The walk has some good climbs and descents and follows creeks and streams most of the way. Heaps of places for a swim or feet in the water, Kondalilla Falls has a great swimming area. You have the option of camping or not, the Montville Tree House Resort is just above Kondalilla Falls or you could organise to have a second car to meet you at the end and just make it a day trip. The Flaxton walkers camp is very basic just a couple of cleared areas for tents and a long drop toilet you can book online @ $4.50 per person per night. There is no treated water along the route so you would be wise to pack some purifying tablets. There is a great cafe at Flaxton about 2kms before the camp site, great for a coffee in the morning and a quick meal. Here is the link with all the info and maps:

Found this a really helpful way to sort out my gear for Kokoda and as a result I think I will be packing as ruthlessly as possible,also found the spots were the blister pads will be going!!!!

The spider was sitting at face height along the track and was almost the size of my hand

Just some of the scenery along the way

MemberIn addition to my last, found out today that the long awaited Gold Coast Hinterland Great Walk is due to open on the 3rd of March. I can't find any mapping for it on the website at the moment, I have been told that topographic maps are available from EPA. Sorry, only really useful to anyone around SE Qld, but worth a visit if you get the opportunity. Nice way to build up to Kokoda, beats going up the same hill a million times (I'm getting too know my local one quite well
)
Here is a link for the site but there is no recent info added.
