I have received various emails regarding sponsorship of porters and guides to enter our Kokoda Challenge:

You are advised that all porters and/or guides need to go to Russell Eroro's block in Kokoda or call into our office in Gordon's to complete the necessary paper work.

A registration fee of K500.00 MUST accompany all registrations.

    Please note:

    • Entry period ends on the 15th August, 2007
    • Competitors must complete ALL information. Entries with omissions will be disqualified
    • Must include their signature, name, village name, age and trekking company. Or if entering as an independent, they must mark this on their form
    • Each competitor is required to fill out an Indemnity form before the race
    • Participants are responsible for pay for their own airfare in and or out of Kokoda
    • No accommodation is provided by Kokoda Trekking except to our own KTL staff
    • All entries MUST be signed by their next of kin as consent to enter our Kokoda Challenge
    • If injured, it will be the responsiblity of individual sponsors to have them airlifted off the track

Other things to consider. Most of the boys entering these races will need the following:

    • Jogging shoes, the preferred type KT26'S
    • Head torch with lots of spare batteries
    • Something warm if walking from the Owers' Cnr end for when they get to Myola Junction area
    • Small Back pack
    • Hydration Pack
    • Medical Kit
    • Food to last them 24 hours
    • Pain killers
    • Good quality socks
    • Something to keep them awake as its a non stop event, ie lots of coffee

They say in Australia that the Melbourne Cup stops the nation….here on the Kokoda Trail/Track, its this race that stops the track. Trekkers…..porters…..guides…..villagers….children all support the competitors in this race with cheers/high five's and warm wishes as they pass from checkpoint to checkpoint.

Last year I was in Kokoda and with Damon Goerke still out in front you could hear a pin drop…..but when he caught him somewhere around Myola Junction, it was like the 4th July….everyone was cheering/shouting and just SO EXCITED! Then the wait…..will Damon catch Brendan….if he does will Brendan be able to shake him off.

At that point no-one was considering Wayne Urina coming up the rear who was to pass Damon at Isurava to take out the second position. In Damon's words, he went out to quick and found it tough from Brigade Hill onwards on every uphill.

Who will win in 2007, now thats ANYONE's guess!!!
