My son told me about these socks some time ago, a lot of military types wear them and find them very good when operating in wet weather.

They do retail for about $70 a pair, but the guys Ive spoken to swear that its worth the cost to have dry feet for several days.

This place is in W.A. and does mail order stuff for the military.
A few camping and outdoors shops sell them as well,,but Ive not found one yet.

Ah! I've seen these on eBay and had thought about asking around about them.

They're available locally for around $65-$80 a pair or internationally (from the US) for around $40 a pair including postage. Some links below:

I think the local site does a double deal with 2 pairs for $130 or something along those lines. A quick search ought to confirm though.

Just my thoughts on waterproof socks from my experience in the Army and other treks that i have done in different climates. Waterproof socks may be of benefit in cold wet climates to stop feet getting wet..and cold….however in a tropical climate where feet are prone to excessive sweating i would think that you will be trapping the moisture inside….I have always worn two pairs of socks (reduces friction) A light pair of socks close to the feet and a thicker pair of socks on the outside….I always cover my feet in a light smear of vaseline…this works wonders and in the old army route march days of distances up to 80-100 klms in 2 days never had a problem. A good pair of socks to wear are the lightweight moisture wicking coolmax socks available from all good hiking shops.

I second crowies post. You'd want your socks to be as breathable as possible- otherwise you'll wet out from the moisture of your own sweat and defeat the purpose of having a waterproof sock in the first place and life will be pretty unpleasant..
Your clothes for Kokoda will be made from a fast drying/wicking fabric and the same applies, if not more importantly to your feet. 2 pairs of liners containing coolmax and one pair of socks is all you need to pack. bridgedale sell their liners in sets of 2 for around $40, then a light pair of socks such as the bridgedale light hiker will be around the $30 mark. if its a good hiking store, they should be able to mail to you as well..
