MemberLast year we welcomed to PNG on the 1st July 2004 – 9 July 2004 a group of Australians, two of which returned home and sent something back to two schools in the villages where their porters come from.
Out of the blue earlier this year, I received an email from Neil Brunton who informed me he had put together various boxes of school resource materials for teachers use to be donated to his porters school in the district of Kokoda. Can you imagine for one moment how proud their porters must have have felt also honoured as their villages received this very generous donation to their individual schools.
Thanks must go to Neil and Garry for caring. Secondly to SMEC International who I believe helped with freight to get the supplies to PNG. Thirdly to TNT Airfreight for clearing the goods FOC for us. To ourselves for paying the freight to Kokoda and for the distribution of the resource materials to the two schools per their request.
Following is a letter received from

On behalf of the school, the Board of Management of Hamara Community School, Parents and Citizens and not forgetting communityleaders in Ward 14 of Kokoda LocalLevel Government.
We warmly welcome you the delegate here at Hamara Community School and express our deepest appreciation towards such initiative employed by parties concerned about this chool's future and most importantly, the quality of education to achieve.
Hamara Community School is a level three school currently catering for three teaching staff. The school is now established on the state/Government land and has a land area covering 7 hectares which is 100msq respectively.

MemberIt is a small beautiful school despite the fact that it has been ruined down in the past years. However, the school has a bright future in terms of future development. This is evident as indicated by the total land area it currently occupies.

MemberAbove all, this tie established will benefit and meet the necessary requirements of the school in the long run. The school is pleased that donations forwarded has actually met the school's 2005 action plan with 'Teacher's Resource Books' and student's 'Work Books' and Learning materials which has been rated as first priority.
Following the drive down in Rusty's 4 wheel Hilux, the boxes had to be loaded onto shoulders and walked across the Kumusi River to reach one of the schools, namely Hamara Community School to waiting excited villagers:

MemberThis is due to the fact that the school now has insufficient teaching and learning materials.
In conclusion I should like this tie to be effective and furthermore, enable bright future and betterment of the school.

MemberThe other school who received materials did not put on a sing sing but sent a message via Russell Eroro saying they are grateful for the items that were delivered to them.
In the photograph below, good can be seen to have been delivered to the other school.
On behalf of myself, Russell & Kokoda Trekking, thank you for your donation which will hopefully make a difference to the children who live in this village.
There is so much that can be done all over PNG. One thing that comes to mind immediately is a PMV truck for the school at Kokoda that can be used as a school bus to transport children some of which walk many km to school every day. Some small children walk more than 7km daily to and fro.
Kokoda Community has over 200 students in total but very limited resources like all areas of the province:
