MemberFor the past two years Russell has not felt well and was getting used to feeling sick all the time. In July last year a doctor in Port Moresby did some tests and found out he was suffering from gall stones.
If he lived in Australia this would have been simple enough but in PNG it meant being cut open to have them removed. The doctor he was seeing advised against this as the last patient she referred for the same operation died some months later from complications.
Russell then tried unsuccessfully to have his passport renewed so he could travel to Australia for an operation. This took months and the gall stones did not rest giving him all kinds of problems.
Finally in mid January he had them removed.

MemberThe doctor after his operation informed him that on average he removes around two gall stones from most patients but in Russell's case seven in total.
Compared to PNG hospitals, Russell was very impressed with the services offered here in Australia and when news got around that he had walked the Kokoda Trail over 280 times, nurses and doctors popped in to ask him questions and to learn more about it.
The doctor informed him the pain and headaches would not disappear immediately but as the days went by, he felt better and better. Only one nagging pain remains and that is his back pain from carrying backpacks for over 12 years of his life as a porter and guide on the infamous Kokoda Trail.

MemberRussell has missed walking in the bush during 2005 and is now looking forward to growing more treks in PNG.
This year our goal is for Russell to go out and walk as many treks as he can find and to rate them so you our trekkers can be offered the chance to come back and once again enjoy PNG's hospitality.
It is also our wish to try and grow other areas so that youth from other provinces can earn and villages can gain from tourism.
With Russell's experience he can train others to follow in his footsteps. Stay tuned for further updates.
