MemberUpdate 15/02/06: Rob is back safely in Port Moresby, tired but ok, refer below:
Hi Gail, yes, me and Tom just made it to Owers corner yesterday morning and then i rode into port moresby yesterday afternoon. i didnt realise quite how tired i was until last night when i sat down and had a glass of wine!!
Tom was a superb guide (i will write him an official reference which i will cc to you in the next few weeks) and we had a lot of fun and joking around together. In the first attempt Jon carried my bike and I carried my pack…in the second attempt Tom carried my pack and I carried my bike (bike is lighter, but a lot more awkward to carry and required a lot of concentration). of course there was always a bit of a team effort with tom when crossing rivers/fallen trees, etc.
i was very disappointed when we had to turn back on the first attempt (basically the river at templeton one was extremely ferocious and we were running out of food a bit so couldnt wait for it to subside… i think jon made the right decision that we had to turn back)… so i was even more happy to have made it with the second attempt… even though now i am very broke!!!
a guy called narai billy turned up to pick up tom at owers corner so that was good (there was a little bit of confusion about paying him… he wanted me to pay 100K for the pick up but i had by this stage given the last of my money to tom, so i said i couldnt/wouldnt… i hope that gets sorted out in the end and that tom doesnt end up paying for it – i think Tom paid him 20K so far?)
anyway, thanks again for your advice and encouragement, i will certainly give your company a positive mention in my next web/email update (it sounds like business is booming for you guys this year which is good)
I will probably be in Port Moresby for 2-3 weeks whilst i look for a boat passage to australia
thanks again, stay in touch
Rob

Previous message from Jessie our radio operator to me in Australia:
Also the Doctor arrived at Kokoda on Sunday and was picked up by RCE1 and driven down to the block. He will fly back into Port Moresby on Wednesday.
kind regards

Cant help wondering where the swedish backpacker is at the present time, hopefully he is ok.
The doctor Jessie is referring to is one of our ex trekkers who is not a doctor but a paramedic who kindly offered to return to PNG and bring with him medicine for the Kokoda Hospital and even deliver it there himself.
What a wonderful gesture.
In fact, there are so many generous trekkers around. Here at my home on the Gold Coast I have a truckload of school supplies for Kokoda School hand delivered by an ex trekker.
Yesterday, I received a box of second hand boots, 9 pairs in all from an ex trekker. They maybe second hand but to the boys whose feet they will fit, they will think they are brand new.
Also in our garage is a large box of medical supplies also destined for the Kokoda Hospital the second year in a row, a donation by ex trekkers from Victoria, once again much appreciated.
In PNG is some boxes of goods sent from Victoria. I have not seen them as yet but have been informed they are full of AFL footy jumpers and boots kindly donated by clubs. Tks to Cathy for collecting all these and for the shipping company who I believe sponsored the freight.
If anyone has anything to donate, please send it to me as we have purchased a container which will be leaving end of this month with our food ration packs and other supplies so providing it isnt the size of a house, I am sure we could squeeze in a few extra boxes.
If you have anything in mind, please email me:
tks in advance.
