MemberThursday 16th September, 2004:
On Thursday morning when I am pretty sure most of Port Moresby residents were all still fast asleep, we awoke, (Russell Eroro – Kokoda Trekking – my sub contractor) and myself, and headed off to the airport to drop off 500 kg of cargo for the half way point at Efogi along the Kokoda Trail. It was an early start as we had to load all the cargo on the back of our truck and have it down to APNG by 5am to be exact.
Later in the morning around 10am my husband John, Kenny our haus boi, Russell (veteran of 286 treks based in Kokoda) and Eric (veteran of 70 treks based in Sogeri) headed out along the road to Sogeri for our planned trip down to Goldie River. After turning off at the monument at Sogeri, we drove along the road to Ower's Corner eventually parking the vehicle at Eric's sister's house where he knew it would be safe and started walking towards Ower's Corner.
This is an approximate 7k walk in open grasslands past friendly villagers, children waving and no steep hills.

MemberThe scenery was breathless compared to Port Moresby and it was easy at this stage not to think too much about the long walk ahead.
At a small creek crossing we came across a woman washing her clothes and her son enjoying a swim in the creek. She smiled happily as I snapped away with my digital camera:

MemberOur haus boi Kenny couldnt believe the scenery and at one time remarked:
Later whenever you go finish, (Kenny – who hails from Mumeng in the Morobe Province and who has been working for us for over 10 years) stated …. Eric will have to give me some land and I will live here and grow my own kai kai (vegetables) – taim mi lupun! (old)

MemberEric, takes time out for a photograph. This guy is just so fit and believe me makes walking up and down the hills look just so easy that he doesnt even breath heavy- absolutely amazing. Eric is only 25 and has been trekking since he was 17 when he did his first Kokoda trek. Since then he has been hooked and is always asking to guide yet another trek.
When he is not on the trail, Eric can be found in supermarkets helping to purchase the many food items required for our treks. Then he and Russell have the huge task of breaking it all up and repacking the food into day order so when our Guides & food porters take off with their trekkers, everything is all neatly laid out for them in day order, ie Monday, Tuesday etc. Otherwise we would run the risk of trekkers consuming more than allowed and then running out of food at the end of their trek.
When I mentioned I had a great time, he asked that I help spread the word as him and his many wantoks in the Sogeri would love to take people out for day treks & weekend overnight treks:
Editors Note: Eric went back out the very next day with three Australian trekkers and is presently on the trail with our other porters heading to Kokoda.
