MemberEVERY man and his dog seems to be doing the Kokoda Track…. now a couple of records are being claimed for the feat. Around about Independence week, among 40 or so people doing the hike were an Australlian woman aged 71 and two Papua New Guinean children, aged seven years.
Both are possibly records, for the oldest female and youngest children to do the track.
Jocelyn Medhurst, 71, did the track with her son Tim and grand-daughter. She is thought to be the oldest female to have completed the trek.
She was full of praise for the warmth and hospitality of the Koiari & Orokaivan people and guides from Kokoda Trekking.
She was happy to have fulfilled a personal philosophy of "if you want to do something, work out how to do it … and do it".
For the title of the youngest Kokoda Track walkers, that is being claimed on their behalf for seven-year-olds Millie Knight and Ruth Buvena. They trekked with three other children, Buyami 8, Grace 10 and Henry, 13 with guides from Koiari Trekking.
They are believed to have taken the age record for the trek from an Australian girl, aged 8 who completed the walk recently.
It is also believed they set a record for their age group in completing the walk in just four days.
Meanwhile the popularity of the Kokoda Track continues to grow with several hundred trekkers crossing this month.
Editors Note: I am not sure if Jocelyn is the oldest Australian woman to walk the trail but she is the oldest to have done so with Kokoda Trekking. Also another record was set. Jocelyn, her son Tim and granddaughter Sally were the first three generations of families to walk with us. What is even more amazing is that Jocelyn was in a car crash and postponed her trek till she felt she had recovered. All in all a remarkable woman and we congratulate her.
