MemberHi cdt Smith,
You won't need much Kina on the track, about K50 would do, that's mainly if you want to buy some fruit or drinks that the natives sell in the villages, just make sure you keep it in a secure place and it is in smal change. Most things cost K5.00 and that natives won't have change. There is a small canteen at Kokoda that also sells drinks.
Have lots of funNettie

MemberNettie,
For someone doing the full track, I believe 50Kina is a little light although it was about what I personally needed. Some of our group spent that much on bananas alone. Most enjoyed the odd can of coke along the way as well. Cash is also needed as a form of gratutity if group wish to meet Ovura Ndikik, one of the few remaining Fuzzy Wuzzy Angles through his Son Andy of Nuduri Villiage. I believe 100 Kina is a more realistic amount.

MemberSounds to me a gratuity payment made to your porters isn't made at the end of the trek then, but more then likely at the presentation afterwards. unlike when i did the inca trail last year when we dug deep into our pockets on the last night of the trek. Personally i prefer afterwards, i didnt like having to carry all that money with me.

MemberMy assessment of cash needs whilst on the track does not allow for the usual gratutiites to your porters. Probably 100 Kina may still be enough to cover all gratutities.
You will need to know exactly when you will be parting company with your porters as to cash needs whilst trekking or if an opportunity exists upon you return to Port Moresby where presumably you will have left valuables not needed on the track.
This was my observation based upon arrangements with our Travel Company which was not KTL. No doubt arrangements may differ with others.

MemberJust remember that in the villages you stay at the locals may provide you with cooked vegetables or fresh friut and you will need to pay for this, we paid 5k each to the village when fresh food was provided and shared it with our porters. So make sure you have a supply of 5k notes. Also at places like Brigade Hill there are locals selling food as well which you may want to buy.

MemberI have been unable to procure K5 notes, as they were not even listed on the order form at my bank. I have a good supply of K10 notes to take with me, so hope I can get change from someone.

MemberIt was my experience that note exchange, (K10 notes to K5), was readily available at foreign exchange points at Port Moresby Airport. No cost was involved in August last however things do change.
