This morning 30 competitors lined up to contest this year's Kokoda Challenge Race. Brendan Buka is the hot favourite once again to win this year's race. Before the start one guy came forward and withdrew saying he was not feeling too well, another guy missed the start and commenced his race some 30 minutes after the rest due to a night on the town.

Unfortunately the start was delayed some 7 minutes until we were already and lined up and the boys were off down the first hill towards Goldie River.

We have had an update at Imita Ridge and the leaders at that stage were, Brendan Buka, Luana Nagas, Samson Joheri, and the two Yauga brothers, Andrew and Horace closely followed by the others in the race. I have to go off to Port Moresby to get the flight away to Kokoda

    Updates at Naoro:

    • 1st Brendan Buka
    • 2nd Moses Buka
    • 3rd Samson Joheri
    • 4th Andrew Yauga
    • 5th Ramsi Idau
    • 6th Horace Yauga
    • 7th Luana Nagas
    • 8th Jessie Aire
    • 9th Wayne Urina Tihimi
    • 10th Banny Buka

1st into Efogo, the legend, Brendan Buka in a time of 2:35 but deducting the .07 late start = 2:28. In 2008 he hit Efogi at 2:10 so at this point in time he is behind his record breaking 2008 record.

Its now 3pm and no sign of any other competitor at Efogi the half way point.

In 2nd place, Andrew Yauga who passed through Efogi at 3:25pm – seen here on the left. He used to be one of our favourite guides but left to work with Rod Ori when he started his own trekking company. He is sponsored by Ko Trek. Matt Bollinger from Sydney their trekking partner, flew in just to bring up the gear you see here in these photographs.

Previously reported as Ramsi Idau but now just corrected to be Samson Joheri. Ramsi has already passed Efogi in about 15th position.

In 6th position overall is Lenny Enjeka one of our hard working food porters who walks with my son Shane. Poor Lenny had his backpack, head torch etc stolen last night. Approximately 10pm last night he phoned me with the news so luckily I had some hand held torches here in the house so I was able to give him that. Wallace one of our guides at Owers' Corner was holding a small backpack so this morning Lenny lined up with the rest of the runners in this year's race.

In 11th position at the half way point of Efogi was Tom Hango. We were starting to wonder where he had got to as he is normally up with the lead group. He clocked in at 4:62

07:10 – and Brendan Buka is just passing Templeton's Crossing heading for Eora Creek. He appears to be behind his last record as in 2008 he was at Eora Creek at 7:14. I am told he is fit and flying obviously trying to make up some time as no doubt he wants the extra K5000 to break his own record:

Perhaps he needs some more salomon shoes like the ones donated to them in this photograph when he ran in the Gold Coast Kokoda Challenge. This time round he was running in a pair of KT'26's.

Have just received another update from Harold Hauro on a sat phone at Eora Creek, Brendan checked in there at 08:12 had something to eat and had some medicine applied to his back as he is suffering some back pain. Apart from that he is fit and well and about to head home to KOKODA.

In second place at Templeton's at 08:08 was Andrew Yauga! The photograph of Andrew was taken when he went to Australia to act as support crew for our teams who entered the Kokoda Challenge Event on the Gold Coast
