Kokoda airstrip to take Dash 8:

The Kokoda airstrip is being upgraded for Dash 8 aircraft use. Kokoda Track Authority says however with the continuing rain in Kokoda, the opening of the 350 meter airstrip extension will not be possible before ANZAC Day. Hundreds of visitors are expected in and out of Kokoda in April leading up to and after the Anzac Day on April 25.

Twin Otter aircraft into Kokoda will therefore be available, mainly through Airlines PNG and Regional Air, while a new airline National Aviation Services will also be servicing that route in early April. Alternately, Air Niugini Dash 8 services are available through Girua Airport in Popondetta and by road to Kokoda.

KTA has called on all Tour Operators to advise of their aircraft requirements for flights in and out of Kokoda between Sun 17 and Wed 27 April, to assist the airlines and tour operators in the best utilisation of aircraft for forward and back loading of passengers and possible food drop diversions into Naduri and Kagi.
