MemberA month ago my son Nathan heard about another tractor lawn mower with slasher being sold by a school mate of his. We puchased this an Aseki tractor and slasher and had it sent to PNG. The weekend it was supposed to set sail to Oro Bay, the cylone hit. Hence it is now sitting here in Port Moresby with no way to get it to Kokoda until the roads are repaired.
However, if we ever get it there it will be a backup for the New Holland tractor which is presently out of action due to a broken spring.
Oh, well we are at least trying to keep up the maintenance at the airport and to help beautify Kokoda.
Peter, our mechanic seen here on the tractor says its a heavier duty tractor compared to the New Holland so here's hoping we can one day get it over to Kokoda.
I asked if there was any possible way it could be taken over on a Hercules when delivering goods to aid workers but was told this was not at all possible and that they presently had boys with bush knives cutting the airfield.

MemberUpdate May 2008: We are pleased to announce that the renovations have been completed at the Kokoda Airport. It is now functional and we believe one of the best looking airport terminal areas in PNG. The photographs show the progression of Kokoda Airport. If any trekking companies wish to make use of the toilet block they will need to contact us and purchase a key.

Pic 1: Airlines of PNG agent Grace Eroro forced to sit on the cement to load their clients and prepare manifests
Pic 2: gradually the walls disappeared along with the timber seating leaving only the steel posts remaining
Pic 3: the very first photograph I ever saw of the Kokoda airport terminal building
Pic 4: long grass surrounding the airport area

MemberDue to all the rain in Kokoda its been a battle to keep the airport open with the airstrip so wet. As a result we have had several teams cutting grass with bush knives, lawn mowers and mothers raking trying to make the grass short enough so it dries out.
Today I went down and back to Kokoda and was pleased to see the airport looking quite nice with most of the grass now having been cut. The Hevi Lift pilot however was complaining as an aircraft landed there earlier today and hit the brakes causing grass to be lifted leaving behind mud patches on the airstrip. He thanked us for the work we have done to try and keep the grass short so when the sun comes out it has a chance to dry the ground.
