Next Saturday 26th August while most people are snug in their beds, competitors will be gathering at Ower's Corner for the commencement of this years Kokoda Challenge 2006.

This year we have decided to change the direction of the race and finish in Kokoda instead of Ower's Corner. Logistically it makes more sense as we are a Kokoda based company and families of all our staff live in and around Kokoda.

Come Sunday, I suspect we will see one of the biggest crowds ever in Kokoda to welcome home their trek heroes all trying to win the major prize of K5,000 for the first person home and a bonus of K5,000 should they break the track record of 22 hours 1 minute and 15 seconds.

Last years winner, John Hunt Hiviki from Kokoda who couldnt stop smiling from Goldie River when he headed up the last hill at Ower's Corner:

John Hunt Hiviki has entered this years event and has experience on his side along with some other competitors who will be back for the second year in a row.

One of our KTL guides Tom Hango 3rd in last years race is once again coming back this year and hopes he finishes 1st in 2006 – Tom's time 23 hours 34 minutes and 46 seconds:

Attention all Tom Hango fans – update Thursday 24th August: Tom took ill today and we had to take him to the private hospital. Tests have confirmed he has Malaria and has been told not to compete in the race.

So Tom is a late scratching although he still wants to race. Tomorrow Russell will arrive over from Kokoda and I feel he will inform Tom that he definitely cannot race. At this stage he is obviously so disappointed as he has been training really hard to compete in this years race.

Bernard (Benon) Aruo (a Kokoda Trekking – KTL boy) – 24:08:46 – 4th in last year's event has put his name down for this year's race. Benon walked with Ron Barrassie who has kindly donated his race gear:
