Just wondering – as I've been doing some walking lately instead of catching the bus and find after walking all day my back is quite sore. I have scoliosis, but this is not normally a problem.

Should I think about taking some Deep Heat/Dencorub/muscle-pain relieving cream with me on my trek to Kokoda?

I am not a qualified pyhsical trainer however it is my experience that in the early stages of any preparation for a severe physical challenge, most will suffer pain in some part of ones body. This is quite normal. The test will be the challenge itself. If you have done the right preparation you will succeed over all the pain you may have experienced during training.

My further experience is that dencorub or like product offer only very minimal relief. It would be very unwise to rely on these as a "cure all".

It cannot be emphasised enough that physically, Kokoda is no "walk in the park". In my opinion it is absolutely essential that all intending trekkers should have experienced, as a minimum, extensive overnight hiking in the Australian outdoors, as well as steep uphill and downhill training before arriving to start the Kokoda Track. I am sure however that many have completed the track without this preparation, but I do wonder how much more they would have enjoyed the experience had they completed a "textbook" preparation beforehand.

I would strongly recommend to all, the excellent comprehensive articles previously posted by others on this forum for guidence on the necessary preparation.

Best wishes for your continuing preparation.
