Recently I received by email from Geoff Honey who entered our Kokoda Challenge Race this year in August. He has taken time to put pen to paper and sent me an attachment which I will share with you now.

The run down on the Kokoda Recognition Run in honour of Dr Geoffrey Vernon, Military Cross (MC), Australian Army Medical Corps (AAMC).

Geoff Honey set out to participate in the 2007 Kokoda Challenge a foot race across the Owen Stanley Ranges in PNG using the Kokoda Track. Geoff dedicated his participation in this event to Dr Geoffrey Vernon MC, Australian Army Medical Corps. Further detailed information on Doc Vernon is contained in the notes attached.

The attached notes may give you some idea of the event and the issues faced by the participants.

Photograph: Geoff Honey shortly after the commencement of the race at the Kokoda Memorial Hospital. Geoff is in the middle of this photograph. The eventual winner Brendan Buka is slightly in front to his right (red shoes) who won in an unbelievable time of 17 hours 20 minutes! Brendan also set the record in the opposite direction in 2006 in a time of 17 hours 49 minutes. Each year he has picked up prize money of K10,000.00. Will he enter our event in 2008, I bet he will, where else can he pick up K10,000 so quickly? When he arrived at Owers' Corner he could have kept going to Port Moresby. The first thing he wanted to eat….was…wait for it….an apple!

Last week Freddy Yauga arrived in town off a trek and had with him his digital camera. He gave me his memory card and I noticed some he took at Owers' Corner at the end of this race when Brendan Buka came home. I will share a couple of them with you now.
