MemberPlease note: Russell Eroro's family block in Kokoda where you can stay and share stories with Russell Eroro (287 kokoda treks) and his brother John Derrick (over 300 kokoda treks) – spanning 12 + years!
Russell's family have recently completed new 'win house's' and cant wait for our trekkers to occupy them this coming weekend. They also welcome to their block any other trekkers either independant or with trekking companies. Cost is as listed on the attachment, K20 per person per night.
They also have plenty of room for the erection of tents and a creek close by where you can take a dip and/or a wash/shower.
They also have two showers installed on the block in case you prefer your own privacy.
Russell Eroro has a Red Hilux Truck which is available for hire for small treks to run trekkers around Kokoda or for a dropoff/pickup at Popondetta Airport.

MemberOne of Russell's win houses during the construction process. It is now completely finished and will house its first guests on the night of the 23rd April when approximately 100 trekkers arrive at Russell Eroro's Family Block.
When I asked how they can handle such large numbers, Russell replied that they have been entertaining Kokoda Trekkers for over 12 years. He has many brothers & parents living on the same block.
They split the work into four groups. If a particular person cannot handle the job herself, she invites her friends and relatives to help with the cooking to ensure their VIP guests are well fed and looked after.
Two of Russell Eroro & his close knit families guesthouses during their construction stage earlier this year. I was informed today that there is three more on the way due to be finished this week in time for the Anzac Treks to arrive from Isurava:

MemberI have been lucky enough on three occasions to witness their Oro Province hospitality and believe me they make you feel really really welcome!
Today 20th April I heard back from a trekker who returned from Kokoda who could not make it up to Isurava. He flew out on Sunday and returned to Russell's family block on Monday Night. Our trekker then had to wait in Kokoda until his flight today Wednesday to Port Moresby. When asked if they looked after him in Kokoda he remarked how Russell's Mum kept wanting to feed him. He politely kept refusing as he had had enough, but the food was continually being offered and he said the hospitality of the family second to none.
He added that he has travelled extensively in his job in the army and said the way he was treated on 'The Block' was excellent and could not fault it in anyway:
Myself at the family block mid 2004 when I was presented with a beautiful hand made bilum and tapa cloth from Russell's mother. In the background is John Derrick Eroro considered one of the longest walkers on the Kokoda Trail. Both John & Russell were trained by the legendary Clive Baker who employed them both for many years.

MemberAnother plus to be considered, is the fact that Russell Eroro owns a Mitsubishi Canter and large groups can also be catered for with regards to hiring his transport to and or from Popondetta Airport to Kokoda and also Buna/Gona regions.
During the past few months John Derrick Eroro has made a trip down to the coast to talk to villagers to find out for himself first hand what they will offer our trekkers.
On the 26th April, 2005 John will lead his first trek for the year which will last for 11 days leaving Ower's Corner for Kokoda where they will overnight and then the hire of KTL1 our truck for the journey to Buna/Gona. All trekkers will then return via Popondetta with Air Niugini.
The added advantage is the hire can be done in Australian Dollars either by credit card by clicking on the following:

MemberFor all our treks we arrange a traditional sing sing welcome for our own trekkers to show some more of the Oro Province culture and tradition. Trekkers can pose with them for photographs if they wish.

MemberRussell Eroro's canteen where you can buy what we call here in PNG trade store goods. The store mainly supplies the people living in the block but trekkers can purchase if they want to buy something from them:
