MemberFor things like leaving your passport etc there. Do they have them?
If so, how big are they? as we want to leave a spare set of clothes at the hotel along with other things not neccessary to take on the track with us. Do you get one each or one per couple? Or do you just leave all the stuff you need to leave in your room at the hotel?

MemberHi Fluppy.
At the Gateway you leave all your small stuff such as wallets passports etc etc in the safe, it goes into a big envelope with your name on it. All of your other stuff such as luggage and other big stuff goes into a secure room which is locked and only a couple of people have keys too.
One of the guys on our trek took his passport on the trek with him and it came back a pulpy mess due to the dampness ,so leave it at the hotel.
The security there is excellent.
You dont leave anything in your room because you check out and someone else will have your room while your away.21/09/2009 at 1:11 am #102992Rocky
MemberI'm a bit funny about my passport fluppy and took it with me. You will need to take care with it though or as Pete suggest it could get ruined. Mine was safe and sound in multiple ziplock bags. (I left everything else I didn't need)

Your passport will be secure at the Gateway – it gets locked in the Managers safe along with wallets/other valuables. Extra baggage and clothing can be left in their baggage room which is not quite as secure but safe enough.
Just remember to go down to reception with plenty of time as you are on PNG time and it may take a little while to organise it all. And when you return triumphantly after your trek it will probably take longer to get it back – especially annoying when all you want to do is have a shower – change into clean clothes and get to the bar to celebrate. Just remember it is all part of the experience.
Getting a room key may also take a while at times. I can recommend the restaurant at the Gateway as your "last supper" as they do an excellent buffet.
You trek is close now so recheck the gear you are taking. If everyone had the hindsight not to take as much as they did on the trek the porters (or more importantly you) would be carrying light bags.
Good luck
Cheers shane

MemberThanks everyone for your insight. Valuable as always. I took photos of some of our gear the other day when we did a test-pack. Looks like a bloody awful lot of gear if you ask me! I guess once we get through customs, we will be able to remove a lot of the medication packaging which will no doubt help heaps. I will post the photos when I have downloaded them from my camera.

MemberHi Fluupy
We stayed at the Gateway.
Our group made use of the safe deposit boxes available to guests we left all our Passports, Tickets and Aussie money in there no problems at all. I see some made use of the manager's safe I am sure that you would have no problems there either.
Our spare clothes etc went into a secure area again no problems.
I am sure that if you are staying at the gateway you also will have no problems.
