Hi Boonie, I have not long walked myself so can now give you my thoughts.

In May it should be ok as this year it did not rain much. Mostly on the trail it rains in the afternoons but on a 9 day trek you are mostly at your campsite by then.

Ower's Corner to Templeton's Crossing areas we did not need sleeping bags but the night at Eora Creek it was cool. It was then the same right through to Isurava but at Kokoda it was hot again.

Re food, on my track we trialed dried Back Country meals and found it very nice. Hence in 2005 we will be making up 24 hour ration packs, 1 per person per day, ie breakfast, morning tea, lunch & main meal plus a couple of munchies/tea/coffee/sugar and the likes. Of a morning everyone will be handed their day pack which they will have to carry each day. I found on my track that I did not eat everything and when I would receive my new pack I would give anything left in the day before pack to the porters.

With regards to trout, yes our guys caught some as well as prawns and cooked it one day for our breakfast. There was only a few trout so I left it for the guys so have no idea how they tasted but the prawns were really nice.

On my 9 day hike, we walked on average from 6:30am of a morning until midday at the latest except for the last day when we had to make up time when we got behind due to rain and one guy getting sick with Malaria.

I do not fit into the 'super fit' category and it was very achievable for me.

    Hope this helps.
