Krys
MemberMy brother, husband and I would like to do the Kokoda trek sometime soon but we are concerned about being able to get ration packs that are gluten free or dairy free OR both. We have fairly severe reactions to these foods so its really important that we eat the right foods, I can imagine the trek would not be much fun when having to deal with the various reactions we get. Does anyone know of a reliable company that caters for these allergies in ration packs? Preferably in Australia. Thanks, Krys.

Memberhi krys,
if you google "gluten free or dairy free ration packs" there is information that will be of assistance and links to other sites. When you talk of serious reactions , I think it would be a good idea to discuss your trek plans in depth with your local GP. If your reactions are of the allergic type, with careful planning you should manage the trek fine. If however your reactions and history are of the anaphylactic type needing acute medical intervention, be mindful you will be trekking in a very remote area where medi-evacs can be weather dependant and specialist medical support a long way away. Having said that, it does not mean that you would not be able to cope with the demands of the trek. I simply offer the advice for consideration. Check out Google and good luck with your plans.regards

MemberHi Kyrs, have noticed your posting and would like to reply that we have had several people trek with us who suffer from the same problem as yourselves. What has worked for us, is that you check out the website: http://www.trekon.com where we purchase A, B & C packs and see what you cannot eat.
You then purchase food to supplement what you cannot eat and two months in advance post it to the address where we purchase the food from in Australia. They then send it up to us and mark 'special food on behalf of…???'. We ask them to mark: Day 1, Day 2 and so on. We then pack it along with our other trekkers food for the half way point and so on.
We ask you to keep the receipt for the cost of your food and allow you to deduct from your final payment and either fax or scan through a copy of your receipt.
There is also a guy on the Gold Coast who has walked twice with us, an experienced bush walker who I am sure would not mind you making contact if you are worried about walking.
We also had a 70 year old woman walk with us who gluten free and dairy free and she did extremely well. She walked with her grandson and son.
Most times we can also purchase local village food when available to supplement our ration packs and do so wherever possible.
