MemberWe culled a lot of our munchies, but I would still take the muesli bars, the glucose jelly-beans, the space food sticks and the sesame snaps/mixed nuts & sultanas.
However, just today when I was out shopping, I thought of those noodle-in-a-cup things (the ones where you just add boiling water to the cup). They take up a fair bit of room, but are extremely light and disposable once used. I am thinking of taking some of these next time I trek.
Thoughts anyone?

MemberHi Fluppy, if you trek with us you will not have to bring them as they are already included. Shane always takes with him some jelly beans!

MemberBoss Meri – Certainly are planning to trek with you guys. Mr Fluppy is worried his knees won't hold out by then, so I'm trying to talk him into letting me go with you guys without him. Ok, so I won't know anybody, but hey, it's all good. Now back to buttering Mr Fluppy up…

They do seem practical, however, disposable is not a word I would use. The materials used to make these take tens of years, or longer, to break down. You certainly wouldn't want to leave the empty packets in PNG, which means bringing them home. One of modern societies worst environmental products on the market!Edited to add:
Oh, sorry, I think I quoted this from the previous poster but can see now that it was originally posted further up the thread!29/06/2010 at 4:13 am #104427Fluppy
MemberSaloo88 – thank you for bringing that to my attention. I had not considered the environmental impacts this would have. I guess burning them in the campfire would also be out of the question – as polystyrene emits toxic chemicals into the atmosphere when burnt…
However, if KTL also provides them as part of the food ration packs, what to do then? How to maintain sustainability and be friendly to the environment in that case?

It's a tricky one Fluppy, I agree. Having been on a 'greening' journey for quite a number of years, I have learned that the best way for me as an individual to become and remain green is to apply environmentally principles in my daily life as I become aware of better options. By that I mean, I can only employ green principles if I know of them, and packaging is one area that I feel strongly about, which in turn means I am acutely aware of the damage created in the production and disposal of items such as foam cups.
Having said that, I cannot have expectations of others green principles-I have certainly learnt the hard way what happens when I go head to head with people on topics that I am passionate about! As for KTL, it is their decision as to how they go about being environmentally friendly-I am sure they are doing many things that I would not have thought of and I am certain they are making huge contributions to improving the lives of human beings. I can hope that in time, all companies (travel or otherwise) will become greener and more environmentally aware.
Baby steps…….
