MemberCheap jet services for tourists and families
Growing third-level airline operator, Airlines of Papua New Guinea intends to supplement the efforts of the government to lure tourists into the country with the commencement of its’ Boeing 737 jet services to Brisbane this month (August).
The Airbus is configured to business class seating but the seats will be sold at economy class prizes to make it affordable for tourists intending to come to PNG.Managing director, Simon Wild said obviously the airline expects to gain financially from the commencement of the new jet services.
But also this most recent decision for Port Moresby – Brisbane jet services currently serviced by rival Air Niugini is indicative of Airline PNG’s commitment to enhancing PNG’s appeal as a tourist destination for Australia, a large market source. The airline intends to provide better access for tourists to come to PNG from markets in Australia and beyond.Airline PNG’s aim is to enhance the work of the government through the Tourism Promotion Authority to boost the tourism industry in the country.
PNG was often deprived of its share of the tourism market due to high cost of travel and services provided by service industries.Mr. Wild said that the airline will commence the new twice-weekly Boeing 737 jet services between Port Moresby (PNG) and Brisbane (Australia) this month subject to receipt of regulatory approval. In a press statement recently, he said that Airlines PNG made this decision to enter the Port Moresby-Brisbane market following an extensive route analysis and feasibility study.
This decision was made as a logical next step in the company’s international operations, following commencement of our Dash 8 services to Cairns late last year.He added: “What is unique about our Brisbane services will be that the Boeing aircraft we will be using will feature an all business class seating configuration – with only 60 very roomy and comfortable seats in the cabin.
But we will be selling those seats at discounted economy class prices and yet still providing a free meal and bar service included in the price.”Airlines PNG (previously known as Milne Bay Air and MBA) was formed nearly 20 years ago by John Wild, who has been a permanent resident of PNG since 1952 and a PNG citizen since Independence.
The airline operates a fleet of De Havilland Dash 8 and Twin Otter aircraft providing domestic passenger and charter services within PNG and its international service between Port Moresby and Cairns. The airline’s general manager in PNG, John Fitzgerald added that the airline’s Port Moresby – Cairns services that commenced late in 2005 has been successful in stimulating the PNG-Australia market and have proven that there is room for competition on routes between the two countries.
“We will initially be providing Brisbane services Monday and Wednesday each week but will look to expanding those services when market forces dictate,” he added. The inaugural Brisbane-Port Moresby-Brisbane flight is scheduled for Monday, 21 August. The northbound service will depart Brisbane at 7:30 am and arrive in Port Moresby at 10:40 a.m. The return southbound flight is scheduled to depart Port Moresby at 2:00p.m. – arriving in Brisbane at 5:10 pm each Monday and Wednesday. It will increase frequency of the service towards the busy Christmas/New Year holiday period.
The airline further indicated that, immediately upon receipt of regulatory approvals, it will commence advertising the Brisbane services and introductory fares in the media and will be able to receive and process bookings via its website at http://www.apng.com or by telephone or over the counter.Airline PNG’s decision to service the route originally serviced Air Niugini with a new airbus and cheaper rates prompted the national flag carrier to recommence the Port Moresby – Hong Kong route promising customers cheaper travel.
The national carrier’s CEO, Wasantha Kumarasiri recently announced that Air Niugini would re-launch its Hong Kong service as an extension of its current Manila flight. The new service departs Port Moresby for Hong Kong every Tuesday via Manila returning to PNG early Thursday.ANG is excited about returning to Hong Kong because it is a new source market for tourism from China and other Asian and European countries. It also opens up trade and business opportunities between PNG and other countries.ANG intends to commence Hong Kong flights on August 8 2006.
He added that the airline would boost its Brisbane service with an extra flight on Wednesdays. Discount fares would also be offered for return trips to Australia from PNG to stimulate growth. The discount is inevitable in spite of a hike in fuel prices. The new service and discount fare will counteract competition provided by Airlines PNG.
