MemberDear Russell, John Derick, and the Eroro family,
All members of trek 429 are deeply saddened by your loss and on behalf of all of us I extend our deepest sympathy. I know that Evo has also extended our condolences in a separate email, but I just want to reiterate how sad we all are feeling for you.
John Derick was our guide on trek 429. He gained our greatest respect and admiration, and we all feel this family loss deeply for him and Russell, and for Kinni who was Paul's porter. For us it is made more poignant by the fact that the accident happened exactly one year to the day since we walked off the Track at the end of our wonderful adventure.
Our hearts are with you.

MemberHi Gail
Like many others on this forum, I was devastated to hear the news of Kingsley. Can you please pass on my best wishes to Davidson in particular as well as Russell and the Eroro family. I trecked in 2006 with Davidson and also visited Kokoda last year with Allan and Peter Hazell to help put on water to some of the villages to the west of the Kokoda township. Davidson and the Eroro family were terrific to us and I also remember how friendly Grace was at the Post Office when I visited a few times over the years. I can only imagine the sense of loss as the value of family in Kokoda is far beyond what we can imagine or dream of.
All the best at this time

MemberIn memory of those who died
We remember the young Australian men and women and Papua New Guinea friends who died in the air crash on unforgiving terrain on Kokoda Track on 11 August 2009.
They came like so many others to honour the memories of Australian soldiers who sacrificed their youth and their lives in this and other wars.
In so many ways, they were like the Australian men who enlisted from 1939. They came from same families, work groups, towns, schools and football teams and went to war as a group of mates. Women died in war too.
This group of trekkers like so many others was a family and work group affair. This makes loss so much harder to bear.
They will not be forgotten. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, let us remember them too. They are the children and grand-children of World War 2.
Our sincere condolences are offered to the families who have suffered this loss.

MemberGail, yesterday we spoke on the phone about Kingsley and the appalling plane crash. Thank you for taking time to talk to me at such a terrible time and for offering to pass on a message to Grace (written below).
Dear Grace, when we last spoke on the phone, the terrible, tragic news about Kingsley had not been confirmed. On behalf of my partner Louise, my mother Rosemary and my family, I want you to know that we are all deeply saddened by Kingsley's passing and by your loss. Our thoughts and love go out to you, Russell and the family.
Sincerely, Mark Atkin

MemberUpmost Respect.
Dear Gail.
Please pass on my deepest sorrow to Russell and the Eroro family. The family, the KTL team and all the people of the Kokoda Valley must be devastated over this tragic loss.
The hospitality and mateship we were shown during our time on the Track, in the Kokoda Valley and at Port Moresby has left a life long impression on me. Hearing about the brothers and the KTL boys making their way up the mountain to the scene of this horrible accident defines for me what they are all about, loyalty and kinship. Please pass on my upmost respect and sorrow during this difficult time.
I hope you too are well and managing the stress of this situation.
All the best.
Arron Broom.
—————————————————————–HI Gail,
I have just read about the sad news as well (although thanks Arron for alerting me).
Similar to Arron, please accept and pass on my deep sympathies to those affected by this tragedy – particulary Russell and his family. I too, have cherished memories of our KT experience, and feel for those who have lost loved ones through the accident.
Best regards
