MemberHi
I have received a copy of Mike's DVD yes it is an amateur one just as mine would be if I ever make one, has a litle too fast panning but has some differences to other also great DVDs that I have viewed. This DVD would be great particularly for anyone trekking from Kokoda to Owers Corner for unlike some other DVDs it provides detailed and accurate times for various sections of the track, these times though could I guess vary from when Mike walked depending on hpw dry or wet the track was.
Supplied with the DVD is an excellent detailed cross section map with times, grades and points of interest along the way from Kokoda to Owers Corner.
Mike I do suggest that if this map was also on the DVD as a seperate JPG file those with a computer may find it easier to view as they can increase it's size.
One thing I noticed that Mike apparently did not trek with KTL missing out on the welcoming Sing Sing and the ukulele playing and singing porters along the way.

MemberHi all,
I bought a copy of Mike's dvd as well and found it REALLY helpful. It follows the whole walk in great detail and gives you a good idea of where the hard spots will really be so I am pre-prepared. In addition he includes a copy of the cross-section map of the track with all the estimated times to get from one spot to another and the best times to take rests. I think this map will be extremely useful when I go in July and will probably stop me asking the guides every two seconds when the next rest will be and how much further it is till we stop for the day.
Anyways would recommend this dvd to anyone planning on going:)12/05/2008 at 1:59 pm #99742mikmac1959
MemberG'day
thanks for the reviews. As i have always stated it is
only an amateur dvd, it is a bit hard to survive the track and take outstanding
video at the same time!! But i did my best and am pleased with the final outcome.
When i walked i had done as much research as i could and caried a map, which showed walking times for "a fit and experience trekker in good conditions" as shown by a so called "expert". I considered myself to be resonably fit for my age but far from experienced so i braced myself for times longer than advised on the dvd!!
To be honest the times were mostly inaccurate and in some way spoiled my experience because i was always expecting each day to be longer than it turned out!!
This is why i decided to make my humble home movie to show prospective walkers what it was actually like when i walked and to record how long it took for a reasonably fit 48yr old guy to do it , and not to worry too much because each day we arrived to camp mid afternoon.i do sell the dvd on ebay for $22.00 delivered (check out more feedback there) but
would like to offer all forum visitors a special price of $17.00 delivered.Just email me.
Also for the next week or so i am auctioning on ebay 5 dvd starting at only 99cents + $2.00 postage. I offer a full refund if not satisfied with the amteurish movie

MemberThanks Mike, my copy arrived a few days ago. I agree with all posted comments.. this DVD is great for my research as I'll also be trekking from Kokoda to Owers Corner in June. I like the detailed and accurate times for various sections of the track, though imagine there would be a great variation from when Mike walked if the track was wet.
Mike now includes a CD with an excellent detailed cross section map (PDF file) with times, grades and points of interest along the way from Kokoda to Owers Corner.
Well done Mike, and thanks for popping a second copy in the mail when the first one went AWOL.

Memberhey lorna, on our Anzac Trek last April we were fortunate to have a father/son combination who inherited fantastic artistic and IT skills from their father/grandfather who is one of Australia's finest cartoonists. the result is a DVD of our trek which is of commercial quality. It is specific to our trekking group and gives a real understanding of the history of KOKODA as well as giving special insights into our wonderful carriers and their beautiful and haunting voices in song. If you flick your email to the forum posting I will email you and make arrangements to send you a copy AT NO COST except for collect postage when you pick it. Sharing experiences about KOKODA should not be about making money. It is all about honouring and respecting the legacy. As for times it is my opinion that the trek is about you and your fellow trekkers and advancing at the pace of the slowest person and giving each other plenty of support. It is not an Olympic time trial.
regardsPete

MemberPete, I would absolutely LOVE a copy of your trek DVD. I'm like a sponge at the moment….. the preparation and learning about this battle are half the fun I've discovered. It's interesting comparing different trekking companies. MIke didn't trek with KTL… and it appeared from his DVD that the porters didn't have much interaction with the trekkers at all ( my observations only, could e wrong). I"m hoping to be able to really mix it with them and the villages and learn as much as I can about these people.
Thanks so much for the generous offer .. my email is trilbystation@bigpond.com . It's now only 3 months till I head off, so plan to intensify my training efforts from here on in. My hill training WAS going to be up and down the steep, dry Darling River banks with my pack on…. but hey, it's rained well up into the catchment and the river is now pretty full!! I'd have to say it's the first time I've been disappointed it's not dry. Ha.
cheers
