MemberGot the backpack at the camping shop, it's an 'oztrail discovery 65' it's got everything we need, waterproof, detachable day pack, etc etc, anthony's was $110.00 cause he is 6'3" and had to have the bigger one, we got the packs fitted and adjusted at the camping shop, I am having a 'porter' cause of my knees, but the locals are all around my height, so I got my pack adjusted to me. Not having done any backpacking before I was reliant on the advise of the camping shop, they seem to know what they were doing and the blokes brother had just done Kokoda a few months ago and that's what he took, time will tell I suppose! the best part is that it only weighs 3KG empty, so taking into consideration weight, it's a good start.
Going for our shots next week, now that is something I am NOT looking forward to!25/07/2007 at 4:01 am #98200jafa

Going for our shots next week, now that is something I am NOT looking forward to!Shots – I had my Hep A and Typhoid a few weeks ago. The Doc wrote a script for Japanese encephalitis as well. Nearly fell over when I went to pick it up.
$400.00 – I said no. Apparently it`s not really that common anyway. Touching wood.
The Fish oil is mainly for cholesterol although it benefits joints as well. I can also attest to the fact that the thinking process seems to pick up as well.

MemberONLY 5 SLEEPS FOR US!
Just wanted to add some comments about vaccinations. We were told all you need is Hep A, typhoid and a tetanus booster. My husband also has problems with his knees and is finding the glucosamine is helping although I'm not sure anything will ease the pain while we're on the track…we have packed Voltaren Gel and lots of anti-inflammatories and I think we'll need them! Good luck to all who have upcoming treks, I'm expecting this to be the experience of a lifetime. My husband and I are in our late 40's with 3 grown kids and really excited about the weeks ahead…and a bit nervous.

Memberdcorker – that's great, you will be able to fill us all in on your expierences, hope you really enjoy the expierence. I am going to scan in my dad's diary ( 39th battalion) he had entries at the same time Anthony & I will be walking, so we will be able to trace his exact footsteps during the war, as we are walking as well. Very Special.

MemberQuestion – how much should my pack weigh while training. I have it packed to 18kg and its bloody heavy after 10 mins. Im thinking it wont be that heavy, surely !!
Did a long trek in the sand dunes today – 4 hrs and man i was buggered after that, i think my pack may be a little heavy, what does everyone else think.
on another note……..
good to see the eagles are back to their true form – the big western derby this weekend – should be a good one

MemberHi Austin,
I have just about got everything for the trip and packed my pack yesterday & weighed it, it came to 7 kg, all I have to add is some more clothes, 4 litres of water – 1 kg per litr, and some bits & pieces, allowing for around another 3 kg or so, I figure that all up 15 kg max, this weekend I intend to pack everything i intend to take, clothes & all, I will let you know how much it weighs, Bearing in mind that the mob I am going with supply the tent, so I don't have to worry about that.Comment from Anthony – Did you see Bris Lions? creamed Collingwood, bring on the Eagles!

Memberhi 39th – its weird calling you by number !!
It would be good to know how much your pack weighs. The guys im going with make us carry our own tents, so pretty much everything we need, we carry. Im sort of thinking around 12 – 15kg max would be pretty much right.
Ive been busy getting my injections organised and have it done now – finally. All i have to do is actually get the injections into me – Mmmmmmmmm dont like that part and am sh……t scared of needles. Cant believe i just admitted to that !!
lets see, 69 more sleeps !!
but more importantly – only 5 more sleeps for the big game !!
And tell anthony that the brissy lions did well against c/wood but will find it hard to keep up with the pace come finals time – if they get there that is !!

MemberHi Austin,
You can call me Nettie, most do,
I think the water is the main thing, 2 litres in a camel pack and then a 2 litre bottle, there's 4 k's straight up, It's a bit of an eye opener just how easy things weigh up, wen you are trying to keep it down! I am buying some 'skins', expensive but I think they will be the best for chaffing, they also stop a build up of latic acid in your legs, we are only getting the shorts, the longs would be far too hot! am having hell's own problems getting thermals, every man & his dog must have bought them in the cold snap here, and the only size I can get are HUGE, will have to try in Brisbane, only 24 more sleeps! getting a little nervous, will see how the old knees hold up on this short walk, and decide if i am going back to do the whole walk, Anthony & I are going on to Goroka, been 28 years since I left, am really looking forward to that. There are 14 old diggers going up from the 2/14th, 39th & 2/16th battalions, as this is the 65th Anniversary of the Battle of Isuarva, they are being choppered in.QUOTE(jafa @ 25 Jul 2007, 11:01 AM) The Fish oil is mainly for cholesterol although it benefits joints as well. am trying.. but I keep forgetting to take them!01/08/2007 at 5:02 am #98267austin

have you tried Ranger camper – oconner on stock rd – you are in perth arnt you !!
was in this store last week and it seemed that thay had lost of thermals. I already have skins, both short and long. I will definatley be using my shorts each day as it eliminates chaffing but think the longs would be great for night time use. They are very light and pack very small so i will take them as well.good luck with that.
WOW end of this month eh and you will be there – fantastic

MemberHi Austin,
Just read your 'weight post' regarding your pack weight. I figure you should be able to keep your pack down to 15kg or under. Yes, things will add up pretty quickly but if you pack everything you need, then unpack it and discard, pack again then unpack and discard, you will pretty much still have everything you need.
Training with 18 is not a bad idea to condition yourself. 15 should then feel a little easier, but don't kill yourself ok? Water will be about your heaviest thing. I am keeping my own supply down to 3kg at all times ie. 3L. You're on the ball with your weight though at 15 I think.
By the way…Go the Bloody Eagles!

MemberJust a note on injections, had mine yestereday, and let me give you the drum, don't leave it too late, my arms feel like I'v done 5 rounds with Mike Tyson! Hep B is given in three lots, 7 days apart, so you have to start least 21 days before you leave and the way my arms feel at the moment ( 1 in the left, 2 in the right) I wouldn't want to be lugging a pack around just yet, so give yourself plenty of time! or maybe I am just a woose! 2 more to go!
Galen – I was talking to someone who did the track last year and they told me 4 litre of water, 2 ltr camel pack & a 2 ltr bottle, apparently 2 ltrs dosn't last that long cause it's so hot, and the water tablets take 30 minutes, so they drank the camel pack and filled it up from the bottle again, then filled the bottle at the river, by the time the bottled water was right, they had finished the camel pack, they recon this way they had water all the time.

MemberHi jaffa,
that must be the long course my doctor was talking about, there is a long course and a short course, but because we are going at the end of August, and I suppose left it too late, we have had to have the short course, but I can tell you I would rather have had the long one!

No, I am in Queensland, Glasshouse Mountains to be exact, will be trying BCF ( similar to Ranger Camper) this weekend to see what I can find, unfortunatly where we live there is limited shopping unless you drive for an hour. Always wanted to see Perth, my eldest boy works in Port Headland in the Mining Industry, he was in the Rail Camp which got hit by Cyclone George, he said Perth is really beautiful. One day I will get there!

MemberHi nettie,
you dont wanna go to the big cities, if ever your travels bring you to WA, you gotta come down to the south west – its much much nicer and much more to see.
My injections are the same as yours jafa. NOT CHEAP EITHER !! my sister is a pharmacist so they helps i guess !!!
A mate of mine who knows heaps on nutrition is looking into energy sachets and bars for me. All easy to pack and in ration packs for easy access, so thats seems to be sorted. Im finding i need to eat alot while trekking, i would imagine it would be the same if not worse while on kokoda so this seems important to me.
will keep you posted with how this pans out
