    Hi Galen, Austin and Jafa

Read all your Posts with interest and happy to help with any advice on my 2005 experience, re training, gear, boots, tents etc and weight on your back.

I was 60 when I walked in Apr/May '05 and it was a wonderful experience.

If you like I can email a spreadsheet of everything I took, with individual weights and then I went through the list again when I returned and highlighted what was probably unnecessary and then deleted the weight and saved about 2.9kg, not much I know but so important each and every day.

Let me know if you wish me to send you these lists (also one on my training).

    Cheers

    Warren (Waza – Trek 83)

    Hi guys

Haven't logged on for a few days so thought i would ad my two cents worth in regards to the thermals. I think that even in November you could potentially need them as you are at 2100 near Kokoda Gap so if you stay near there is will be cold We went in Sept and Alola and Templetons were cold overnight. I took 3/4 length pants for night and when it was cold I wore my thermals with the pants over top. Not a sexy look, but I wasn't there to pick up 😉 No need to carry heavy tracksuit pants when thermals would suffice.

We didn't take a tarp – hey if you're going to get wet walking into camp, you don't need to have a tarp to set up – you're wet anyway! What we did take that was quite useful when sitting around camp was a light weight piece of plastic (the clear stuff you can get from bunnings or even a drop sheet) that was about 2 x 1 metre. Hubby and I shared this when sitting around camp or at lunchtimes as the ground was often wet or quite dirty (yes I'm a girl!!!) but seriously, the mud and crap on the ground is not pleasant after you have had a wash and feel clean after feeling dirty all day.

    Cheers

    Hi Mel,

Thanks for your input re: thermals. I think I will take them. I'm packing pretty light elsewhere so it won't be too much of a burden. I'd rather be comfortable and get a good night's sleep and not have ro worry about feezing my ass off. The plastic sheet idea is a good one. Good for laying out equipment also huh?

Can you (or anyone who has been) outline what you added to water and in what quantities? I have been told sugar, salt, gatorade etc. Input please. Also at what times of the day did you do this? Is fresh water available in the morning of each day or must you go down and get it from the creek yourself?

Umm, Austin…Go the Eagles. You bloody beauty! laugh.gif I don't follow the footy so figure I might as well be an honourary Eagle. "Benny"…He's a dead-set legend! wink.gif

Take care all. Enjoy the working week!

    Galen,
i also have a dicky knee , through years of abuse! and would be interested in knowing how you are building yours up, I am doing weights at the moments, however it still gives me curry on a downhill run. We are at the base of the Glasshouse Mountains (QLD) so have a lot of hilly places to train on, Anthony climbs Mt Beerwha, cause he gets bored huh.gif I am still at the baby stage, Mt Beerburrum which is a cement path ,750mtrs straight up, and still finding it a bit of a struggle.

Austin – Anthony is a dyed in the wool Brisbane Lions fan.. he asked that I pass on a message – 'Go the Lions!' I follow soccer but we won't discuss the Socceroo's effort at the Asian Cup, sore point!

    BLOODY KNEES !!!!

I to have suffered the wrath of broken knees. Have had ACL reconstruction and three arthroscopy ops on the one knee. At present its fine and "normal" but would anticipate some wear and tear over the coming months/year. To strenghten the knee you have to build up the muscle surrounding the knee so weighted leg extensions, light squats are a good start.

Knees can become a bit of a problem if you dont look after your injury, especially doing a trek like the kokoda !!

Glucosamine is great for knee joints and other body joints, taken daily, it makes a difference if you suffer from arthritis.

Galen, we accept you into the eagles supporters club, you must always bow and worship the team at all times and have NO consideration for other AFL teams – OK !!

now 39th – tell anthony that the lions got away lightly when they beat us a few weeks ago – we wont talk about that one – but now that we have our team back on track – WE ARE UNSTOPABLE from here on. The lions have had there days and will struggle to be a formidable force in the 2007 finals series, HHmmmmm – i hope im right on that one as they gave carlton a FLOGGING over the weekend.

Jafa – yes mate it was BLOODY AWESOME last saturday night at the footy – atmosphere was electric as expected when playing sydney and it didnt even rain which is a bonus as our seats are not undercover.

Hope you are all training well, Ive stepped up my trek training and am doing some long walks (2hrs) with my pack packed to about 20kg every other day. Will do this for the next month or so and then taper off a little as my time in PNG nears. Along with this i am training with my trainer every other day so am doing something 6 days a week – YEEAH !!

My pack arrived today – so I can start training with it.

On knees. There is an article in this months Mens Health mag that deals with strengthening knees. I also am finding that the Glucosamine and Fish oil supps are taking the cracking sounds out of my knees.

I usually take a backpack of water when I do the mountain thing, but yesterday we did it without, I thought the sound was the water sloshing around, how embarrasment! it was my knees making the noise.. am getting some Glucosamine and Fish oil tomorrow. Only 29 sleeps for me…..
