So after making the decision to go on the trek – I brushed off the old gym set and re oiled the stationary bike. I`ve been going at it pretty hard in the cardio dept and today it`s a bit cool so I throw on the work pants (rather than the sports shorts). They`re a little to big now (whereas before they where a little snug wink.gif )

One of the reasons for me for doing this trek was to give myself the goal of getting some fitness back into myself – pretty chuffed at the moment.

    hey jafa

excellent to hear that you are in training. The main reason for me doing the track is also to challenge my fitness (both body and mind). Over the past 6 months i have lost a total of 26kg. My goal was to lose weight and get really fit and healthy, i have achieved this and man i feel unreal. Once you reach a certain fitness level, you gotta challenge yourself to be able to "stay on track" pardon the pun !! I dont wanna sound as though im blowing my own trumpet but it sounds as though your doing this for similar reasons as me so – i hope you enjoy this experience – even the lead up to it – as much as I am.

Going to the doc today to get my clearance and to get mysely immunised – apart from malaria, i dont know what else i gotta get immunised for, im relying on the doctor to know.

If anyone knows what i should be immunised for please let me know

    happy training jafa

hey guys, in regards to shots and medication check out http://www.traveldoctor.com.au

found this has good information on what different countries are at risk of. I think there is also a contact number so you can actully go see a doctor who specializes in overseas travel.

    Austin,

Monseignour Charles Cunningham was awarded the 'Order of British Empire Medal' for his Chaplin services at Enora Creek.
If you go to the Australian War Memorial web site, Research persons, you will be able to access his file, his service number was WX17091. If you search the records you can request a digital copy of his service records, this may take a little while, about 4 weeks I think, once they have put a digital copy on his file, you can access this from your computer. Just type in Charles Cunningham though

    Hope this helps

Hi Austin, I'm glad you are doing the track. I did it last year with my two sons then aged 12 and 14. I trained for 6 months to get fit and walked the track without any problems. I'm not saying it wasn't hard but the exhileration was immense. I would like to think that you are walking the track not only for a fitness achievement but also as a thank you to the men of the 39th Battalion. There is a sense of the men every step you take. The boys and I were immunised for tetanus, Hep A and Typhoid. We were already immunied for Hep B. We took malaria tablests only because we were staing on in PNG for two months after the track. The other guys did not take anything, jsut made sure they covered up, and used tropical strength RID. Happy to help with any other queries. Libby

    Hi guys

I agree with Libby about the medical requirements. Now that I have read her post it confirms what we had – had forgotten everything. We used Bushman's repellent as it has a built in sunscreen 30+. (reduces what you have to carry too!) Don't forget that the anti-malerial tablets give you greater susceptability to sunburn, although having said that you are not in the sun an awful lot. Mel

    Hi all, I'm back!

I've been really busy and have come back here and see you guys have been posting like mad! The information and tips are awesome. Sorry if I have not replied to anyone that needed a reply, but work commitments have taken priority. (The market is going well here in Adelaide!)

    I hope you're all well and training hard…Austin…Lost 26Kg? Go man! I'd be happy with 6! blink.gif

I got all my gear last weekend. I bought a Deuters hike pack from Anaconda, and pretty-much everything else from there also. They just opened last week in Adelaide. I was not sure about spending so much on the pack but figured I'd use it again so got a good one. I also bought thermals. Will I use these at night in Nov? And…Would I also need a polar-fleece zip up vest as well? (Don't wanna take to much)

Anyways, no time to linger unfortunately. Take care all.

    Bye.

    Galen.

    gday galen,

i to was gonna buy a deuters but decided against it – cant remember the reason why !! I wouldnt think that you would need thermals or a polar fleece zip up but i could be wrong. The only "warm piece of clothing i will be taking are 1 pair of light pants (sports tracky pants) and a rainjacket. I would think that in nov the temperature would be around 30 or so even if it is raining !! Dont take this as gospel as im only going on what ive been told and not experienced – i will let you know on my return on this one.

good to here the adelaide property market is doinf well, got any goos investment properties for me !!!

GO EAGLES and welcome back ben !!

    Hi Guys

We trekked from Moresby to Kokoda in July 04, i paired up on gear with my mate and we both had carriers (we were 45 at the time) as for tent we shared a Coleman 2 x man tent but took a cheap poly tarp as a rain guard (heaps of trees to tie up to) sleeping mat Trek Lite self inflating mat and sleeping bag rated -5 degrees. The tarp is great if you are setting camp in the rain, just set the tarp first and can set up underneath. 2 x pair of clothes (shorts and shirts) but carried about 5 pair socks. boots were good quality Leather and gortex (La Sportiva and still using them). you can go overboard with gear but ask away and only too glad to help if i can

    Hi Paul, (2/7th)

Thanks for your input, much appreciated. Do you think I would need some for of warm clothing in Nov? (For evening I mean.) I had heard that it can get cold at night, although like Austin, I want to pack light. I don't wanna freeze though. My sleeping bag is zero rated and I had thought track pants would be ok if I got that little bit cold. The thermals were recommended so I went with it but think it may be over-kill. I am only taking two sets of clothing, day and night, and have already started discarding stuff I think are only luxury things…Like boots. I'm just taking good old aussie thongs! (Just kidding!) tongue.gif

Can I also ask what/how much training you did prior? (2/7th sounds military) so maybe you were already fit? Did you have much muscle fatigue at days end and if so how did you treat it? I'm figuring some tiger balm? (Beer?)

Hi Austin, yeah, a great market. I'm sure to have something to suit you, if you like you can email me your criteria and I'd be pleased to help. Send me a private message with details or email. The link to my address is on my forum profile.

The Deuters hike pack is pretty neat man, very adjustable and so comfortable. I am planning to do some more hikes, one in Tassie, and there's also a sweet one a mate was telling me about outta The Alice, (Two week trek). I would also like to go to base camp Everest but that might be pushing it. My pack was bought with that in mind so I figured I'd get a really good one capable of handling that little bit more. I also bought a Macpac tent and sleeping bag, again with the intention to get the use out of it. I hunt a lot so certainly will.

Anyway, hope all is well and the training is going well. I'm having some trouble with my right outer knee on descents causing me to favour it and then screw up the left. I'm building it up though so should be fine. No helicopters for me I hope! (Although they are cool to ride in though.)

Anyways, gotta go check out the rest of the forums. See you round. Don't forget Austin, let me know what you're looking for, I'll have it or find it. Most investors are jumping on the gravy train at the moment.

    Galen,
I don't think thermals are an overkill, I will be taking thermals, they are light, warm, and coupled with a track suit, would keep you warm, although I don't think it is going to be that cold, 5 deg sounds cold, but the humidity is high.

    Paul,
how did you find doing the track at 45? I am 49 and only going from Kokoda to Ishuarva, although I have heard that this is the hardest stretch of the track. I am pushing myself pretty hard as we only have 5 weeks to go, but it is hard to stay motivated when it is 4 degs in the morning!!

    hey guys,

to help with muscle recovery and also to keep you warm at night, invest in a pair of long "skins", they are really great and very lightweight. They may look a little dicky but were not out there for fashion stakes !!

I have a pair of short leg and long leg, i will be wearing the short legs during the day to avoid any chaffing and the long pair for the nights.

The tarp sounds like a great idea, wouldnt be wanting to set up tent in the rain but the tarp also sounds heavy !!

My training is going very well and have got that part under control. Galen whats goin on with your knee man, that doesnt sound good. Mmmmm exersices to strengthen the knee are what ya need to do, im sh…. scared of helicopters so wont be goin on any copter rides while over there thats for sure.

was at the footy show last night, (it was held in Perth) and am pumped for this weeks game, gonna be a buety with ben returning to the game, should give the mighty eagles the edge. Go eagles

Now that was an interesting jumper variation that the young girl was wearing wink.gif

The skins things – are they like the things that the Coasters wear when at training? Never been able to find a set myself.
