This afternoon 22nd April, 2005 – we welcomed to PNG two brothers Warren & Phillip Turner who spent the vast majority of their life here in Port Moresby. Along for the journey is the son of one of them who enjoyed driving around town this afternoon having various landmarks pointed out to him.

We also welcomed Sue Scott and her friend Louise Peach along with Sue's son Damian Ward.

Two other trekkers from Tasmania we are still to catch up with but have been told they too arrived this afternoon on the same aircraft.

All 8 trekkers will head out to Kokoda on Sunday 24th April and walk straight up to Isurava to attend a dawn service at Isurava on the morning of the 25th April. Its a big ask for a first day but trekkers have been forewarned and tell me they are up to the task ahead of them.

A separate group of 5 from Williamstown have yet to phone to say they have touched down but will be anxious to meet them tomorrow night at our briefing at the Gateway Hotel at 6pm.

Several others will be joining the walk up to Isurava such as a Channel 10 newsreader Paul Kennedy who trekked with us last year & his camerman. Colin Taimbari from the Tourism Promotion Authority and Deahne Turnbull representing the Australian Federal Police/Australian High Commission.

When trekkers touch down in Kokoda and/or take off from Kokoda they will now have shade as we have just purchased a tent to be used for this purpose.

I have been to Kokoda airstrip on three occasions and noticed people sitting in the bush due to no shade cover while they waited for the aircraft from Port Moresby to arrive. It was then that I decided something had to be done about this situation so early 2005 I put in an order for a tent as protection for our trekkers.

The following tent has been sent down to Russell Eroro's Family block for use at the Kokoda End of the Kokoda Trail:

At this end of the Kokoda Trail at Ower's Corner & in particular Veselugo, there once again is a need for shade while the quicker of our trekkers arrive and wait for the remainder of the group to arrive up the last climb to where the arches have been erected.

When you see this tent you will know you have reached the finish line!

    Welcome home trekkers!
