I concur with Wazza here. You cannot underestimate the need for strong legs when doing Kokoda. Do your training walks on hills and steps and do lots of them, for hours at a time. One of the key elements of training correctly is too ensure you work on your endurance and this can only be done by lonnnnnnngggg walks-work up to it and be capable of…[Read more]

Congratulations Chris on a wonderful achievement in running the Kokoda Track! I know it is hard enough to walk it let alone run it! you and all contestants are made of stern stuff indeed.
Congratulations also to all runners but especially Horace and Jessie, who were Porters with us on our Trek No. 872 back in April/May, it was an honour to walk…[Read more]

Hi all
Just a follow up to the previous posters and specifically Choppereid, who plans to trek in 2013, just on my experience, i would like to offer a few comments/suggestions:
Firstly about your knees, I can understand your plight, as I'm 67 at the moment and was when I trekked last and I've had 'Squash' knees for the past 35 years and other…[Read more]

Kokoda was a running experience like no other i've had. If hard mountainous races and cultural and historical experiences are your thing, I can't recommend the Kokoda Challenge enough. All the international runners couldn't stop commenting how hard the race is, yet we all felt a touch of guilt at making such comments given the manner in which we…[Read more]

Years passed, I started running (not through my ambition to complete the Kokoda Challenge) and the idea of heading back to Kokoda had got lost a little, obscured by the countless other races available to run. Then, mid July this year, I receive an email from Damon Goerke asking if i'd be interested in joining him and a couple other guys to head…[Read more]

One night during that trek, while sitting around the campfire, Papuan runners started filtering through the campsite, stopping briefly to fill water bottles before disappearing again into the night. Each runner was wearing a red bib, carrying minimal gear and using a small handheld flashlight to light their path.
We gathered that this was a race…[Read more]

Congratulations Gail & Nathan on organising another sterling Kokoda Challenge Race, importantly on the 70th Anniversary of the Milne Bay conflict, a very important, but sometimes overlooked battle area.
Congratulations also to all the participants for even attempting the event in the first place and for those who finished the run.
A special…[Read more]
