Hi again FluppyWhen we trekked I think we only saw one or two leeches the entire 9 days trek like wise mossies. But the porters did say when the rain stops the mossies come out, we had rain on 7 of the 9 days.I see more mossies and leeches walking around here than I saw trekking Kokoda.Neither generally worry me and take little notice of them.I do…[Read more]

  • Hi KerrynWe stayed at the Gateway Hotel and found their shuttle bus totally reliable. In fact, when we ran out of Kina, the only ATM was at the airport. The hotel bus took my daughter (32) to the airport, waited while she went to the ATM, and brought her safely back. I had no concerns about her at all.The airport is pretty easy to navigate,…[Read more]

Thanks Brian – water purification tablets as well as anti-squirts medication will also come in the first aid kit…Happy to take the advice on only a 2L Camelbak – this is what we actually have here at home, but thought a 3L one wouldn't go astray. Good thing a 2L one will do just fine.Waterbottles – we found the side pockets weren't wide enough…[Read more]

  • Brian replied to the topic Packs in the forum Trek Preparation 16 years, 4 months ago

Hi FluppyI used a 2litre Camelbak on my trek with 2 litre bottles, one each side, this was quite adequate for my needs and I can recommend it to you.I do though query what you are carrying in your day pack I would honestly suggest that you reduce it at least by half and remember if you are with KTL and you have a porter carrying your larger pack…[Read more]

Thanks Geoff. Something we did discover yesterday was that the day pack might be a tad too small. So we are thinking of buying a separate day pack each – which will need to fit in it:1 x 3L hydration pack1 x t-shirt1 x shorts (these are 1 set of spare clothes)1 x headlamp2 x 1 L or 500ml waterbottles in the side pocketsMunchies for along the…[Read more]

Fluppy,Given your comprehensive investigation and prepartion of all issues, and whilst I am not familiar with the pack you have selected, I am sure it will be OK.Your thirst for knowledge to assist with your planed crossing knows no bounds which is great. Be careful you do not go into "information overload" though.Best wishes with your continuing…[Read more]

  • Hi 007, have just noticed this post and have decided to answer it from our point of view as a trek operator. Lets put it this way, we at Kokoda Trekking (KTL) always insist on tents due a number of reasons such as:

    • We usually stop at 1900 Myola Junction just for starters that requires a tent.
    • If someone is struggling in our group it gives us the…

  • Thank you for your insightful information Mrs Moo. Stretches for archilles – yes – must remember these – as I am hyperflexible, I am prone to injury in such areas if I don't stretch. Again, thank you for your input smile.gif

  • Hi FluppyI would suggest an hour a day would do it, as you are really just building up leg muscles used in uphill/downhill. I started my training on the hill I live on, and walked up and down for an hour every morning. Closer to my trek I started carrying 14-16kgs up Mt Archer (equiv of Mt Coot-tha) once a week. I had no problems at all on The…[Read more]

  • Thanks for the tips guys. Every little fragment and snippet of information I can get hold of before I go helps. Ian – training in a tracksuit in 37 – 40 degree celcius heat?? • Hi FluppyDo not over do it just what ever you are comfortable with this will naturally increase as the more often you train do not wear yourself out before you get there your body will tell you how you are going.I am not sure how many steps there are on the Kangaroo point cliff but I would go up and down these with a few second break each time I…[Read more]

  • Fluppy,I had 36 steps at work. Pretty much did 60-90 minutes up and down each day, with 11kgs on my back, and wearing a fleece and tracksuit. Was drenched with sweat at the end, and shed 13kgs in 10 weeks. Rather than doing for hours on end, try going two up/two down, and if your legs are long enough, three up/two down. This will make it easier…[Read more]
