• I'm also breaking in my new Scarpa trek boots. I purchased them about 3 months ago and have worn them heaps without any problems whatsoever. They were a little uncomfortable to begin with but the more I wore them the better they got. So I was absolutely horrified yesterday when I went for a hike in them ( complete with my new daypck, loaded with…[Read more]

  • Just an update, i have booked in at the hideaway hotel for the nights of 15, 16th april and 25th. The room includes breaky and airport transfers.

  • Hubby now wants a bigger tent than the one we already purchased for Kokoda (which was a black-wolf Stealth Mesh tent or something to that effect). He now wants to buy a 2 person Exped Aries Mesh tent. RRP – $599, weight: min 2.2kg, packed: 2.67kg because we will now be buying an extra daypack…[Read more]

Thanks for all the replies guys. They helped a lot. Sounds like I'll be investing in some crocs or those velcro shoes! I'm going in July. Hopefully I'll love it as much as you, cantwait.Kerryn

  • Yes, that's the one I used. Cost about $10 from memory.

I too paid my deposit to another company before discovering this forum. While I'm perfectly happy with my original choice ( and have spoken to several past clients who have trekked with them – all full of praise, couldn't speak highly enough of the company, the staff, their porters, the historical content etc etc ), I also wouldn't hesitate to…[Read more]

Fluppy, your hubby will still need something to wear around camp at night, such as crocs. Those wetsuit type booties are a real sauna for dry feet. He'll sweat buckets in them…. and i think the idea is to dry/air your feet once we've finished trekking for the day. They'd probably be fine for the creek crossings but will necessitate the taking of…[Read more]

I'm taking as my extra pair of shoes, a set of 'Crocs' for walking around the campsite/river crossings. Hubby is looking at taking those fishing-slipper type things (I have no idea what they're called, sorry). Basically, (from what I understand) they're made out of wetsuit material and suitable for fishing on craggy rocks/barnacles/rock pools…[Read more]

And in fact if I had not paid my deposit to this other company, then I would be (and have no hesitation in recommending) trekking with KTL. It's a shame I didn't stumble upon this website sooner than I did at the time of paying the (non-refundable) deposit :/

I took two pairs of liner socks (Coolmax) two pairs of outer socks (Columbia) and another pair that I wore at night as my feet got cold! That was plenty.

  • My optometrist ordered me a stick called VU-KLEAR fog-off stick. It worked really well for me, but I have to mention that we didn't actually get any rain in the daytime during our trek.I also wear graduated lenses, and didn't really have any trouble except, as you say Brian, I have to stop before looking around when I'm walking. The biggest…[Read more]

Hi Fluppy, with regards to your Caribee backpacks, whilst not the same type, we have purchased several over the years and they have worked well for us and are still going. They also came with a day pack attached and our boys quickly asked for them. As we mainly use our packs for food porters, the small packs ended up with boys we sponsored in…[Read more]

  • The "spring loaded" type you refer to I think is in fact purely of a shock absorbing nature. Spring is internal and poses no problem with mud etc. A bit more expensive than the standard telescopic type. I in fact used the shock absorbing type. This was a conscious decision on my part as I found them to "work best for me" As to whether they give…[Read more]

  • What about spring-loaded ones? I've heard they're very good for pushing off with for that extra 'umf' as they say, but wouldn't they get all clogged up with mud etc on Kokoda?
